On the other side of the hence currys are doing kaspersky 3 user inernet security for £19 and if you use quidco its even cheaper will do every thing and will update its database of spyware and viruses hourly as oposed to daily which most of the free stuff does.
Although there is nowt wrong with the free stuff stated ,I've used them my self

I really don't understand why people pay for AV software. Is it out of ignorance or the myth that it simply must be better because it costs money?

I've been online for over 15 years and have used AVGs free product since day 1 and still use it today. It's never once given me any problems and I bet I download far more than the average internet user. Sure, I've had more than my fair share of virus threats - that comes with the territory of doing a lot of downloading - but AVG has always made mincemeat of them without any fuss.

As far as the firewall goes I just use the standard Windows XP one and it seems to do the job just fine to me. It flags up the access warnings in the correct places and that's all you need them to do.

I do an AVG full scan around once per month (if I remember) and it always come back empty handed. I use Spybot S&D for spyware and run that maybe once per month as well, and with the exception of 2 tracking cookies from one site that I know about, that too always comes back without any issues.

Why pay money for something that other progs will do just the same for free? Madness.

Great to hear a thumbs up for the free stuff. I'll never pay for AV software again.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

I wonder which is better, Avast or the Microsoft Security Essentials.

Well I like Avast and I like MSE - there's only one way to find out. Fight!

    Hiya,

I have windowsXP on one laptop and have managed to install mse on that

But on the one with windows 7 I go through the installation and then get an error message Ox80070643. Has anyone else had problems running it with windows 7?

I have installed Avast on this instead, as this seems to also be fairly popular.

Should I install anything else? As I have installed them following my McAfee running out.

And thanks help on how to uninstall this

    Cheers

I've just removed McAfee by using the suggestions from gaming guy in post 39, thanks.

I've installed Avast (busenbust !!!!! up your ears) as my son downloaded it on his laptop following good advice on this forum.

One query, do I have to register it? It is coming up as only valid for 30 days - I can't remember my son registering?
