Just spend ages reading all this thread. Wrote a longish reply then shut the page...doh!

Anyway, can't be bothered to rewrite, so in short, Thanks to OP, sorry those that don't qualify and lastly...

Is Open Office anything like Microsoft Office?
Does Netthingy come with all packages, regardless whom you order from?
And lastly, are they all free P&P?

    Think that was it!
    1. OpenOffice is similar to Microsoft Office, but it is free. That means that the suppliers who include it aren't actually giving you anything. It is a fine piece of software with one gotcha: if you need 100% Microsoft Office compatibility (eg. bringing home homework from school done in MS Office) then there are going to be niggles.

    2. The different suppliers offer different packages. When I chose, it was a toss-up between one including MS Office and another including a second year of wireless internet. I already had an available MS Office, so I chose the one with the extra year's internet.

    3. They are all free, but one of the supplier's included some "free" software and added £40 or so to the price. (Which I considered a bit naughty.)

On the memory question; I think 1GB should be fine unless you want to run several applications simultaneously.
I priced an upgrade to 3GB (ie. an extra 2GB to add to the included 1GB) for under £30, and I think the Samsung can't go to 4GB (as the base 1GB has to stay).

a friend of mine has had to go to back of the Que , as he filled the forms in instead of his wife , who gets the child benefit , they didnt contact him in 3 weeks he called them and was told this , and now they sending another application out and he has to start all over again
he asked why they ddnt contact him they said they put a letter in the post that he hasent received ...so advise to all if you have not heard within 2 weeks get on to them , my app went off on the monday , following monday my docs arrived back , following monday my confirmation letter saying i had qualified arrived , day after my pin number arrived and 2 days later my barclaycard arrived , ordered on the monday laptop arrived on thursday ... 23 days from start to finish ...think i was lucky
Someone said that earlier on this thread too.

But the best advice is to read the form, because it does say it there!

I'm not attempting to preach, as I nearly made the mistake myself, but rather to help stress the point.

totally agree with you .... the gov is not fair and this country has basically gone to ruin .... what annoyed me few months ago i read in news that foreign workers , working here in the UK have children back at home in poland etc they are claiming child benefit !!! i think thats disgusting
So I assume that if you were working in France, Germany or any other EU Member State, you wouldn't claim the Child Benefit to which you would be entitled, on account of your having children back in the UK, purely on principle, yes?
  • My sister has just reeived her laptop grant card so went along to one of the suggested retailers to get it (not sure if I can say who). Just to make people aware that she was not able to have a choice. They priced the laptop package at the exact amount allowed, which I understand that any money left over should go back in the pot to help others. They also tried to sell her a 3 year insurance package for £149. My sister is a student and single mum so money is already tight in the first place, hence the need for applying for the grant. On the plus side she is obviously very grateful that her son now has the opportunity to have access to a computer and pleased with what she has received.

well no i wouldnt as i would not even be living in a diffrent country to my kids , i think you should only be able to claim for children if they actually live with you , in the country you actually live in , this country dont treat the system fair one bit , take for instant a normal working man becomes unemployed , he has to go through all the form filling the waiting for housing benefit etc , but someone illegally gets in , straight away benefits are paid , a house is found etc , a few years ago i was appraoched by a foreign women in town who showed me a couple hundred pounds worth of clothing vouchers for her kids !!! now i have NEVER seen or heard of any one else getting them , i have worked all my life since the day i was 16 until , the last 8 months and due to the recession are temp out work at the moment , but i have had no clothing vouchers ... or food vouchers , if the kids live here then yes give them child benefit but if they dont then say no simpe as

Your comprehension of the EU, it's Directives and national transposition is spectacularly lacking and wrong.

This is not the thread to discuss this, thankfully, as I would not know where to start with your imbecilic posts.
