    1. Use recovery partition or;
    2. Obtain an OEM disc specific to your brand of computer.

For option 2, this would involve contacting Samsung (if I select the Samsung laptop) and requesting an OEM disc? Would this be free?

most new laptops now come with a prog were you can make your own recovery disc , only once thou , and then thats what you have to use if you re format them a friend of mine had a laptop from pc world xmas and asked were the win 7 disc was and was told they dont suppy one as its already installed , and she asked how she would format if needed to and they said there is a prog on there called power dvd and to go tothe link tech guys and create a resore disc , thats what she had to do and it will take her back to the factory settings so im presuming most new laptops have this now , as companies wont give out discs with full operating systems on and product keys as they are over 100 quid o buy
  • Hi Keypeg

I'll explain what has happened to me, which may help you.

I was made redundant at the beginning of Feb 10, I am claiming income based job seekers, no school meals (Son hates them).

I applied a month ago and have been accepted for the full grant, I to have earnt just under £30k this tax year and last year.

The only difference is that my wife doesn't work as i have always supported her and before all you jumped up members want to comment on me receiving benefits. I have been working non stop for over 13 years and fully intend to go back as soon as a Job appears (My occupation is a very specialised area, so there is not a lot about at the moment).

I would give them another call and query their decision.
i to dont work which is why i am so confused, so many other people i know are in the same position as us, i have rung them twice and queried it but they are still saying the same !!!!!!

if your gettin working family tax cred i dont think you can apply , as there is a wage coming in and the gov is making that wage up for a better income , its child tax cred only .... i think , thought you only got working tax cred on 16k and over ??

No only if your getting child tax cred. but you get working tax cred if you work not 16k or over. my income was less than 14k with it and this is the bit people are finding unfair. this is with alot of the 'pirks' lets call them couldn't get school meals or anythiing. now on esa as can't work due to recent disability unabling me to work get the same income as did when working with more 'pirks' now. Not very fair I think really not encouraging for them slogging they're guts out for the same money. does annoy me when people say very low incomes. I thought I was better off until I was told by CAB that my income was the same!!!!

Windows 7 asks if you want 32 or 64bit during installation. Included with the Samsung laptop is the Celeron Dual Core T3100 and according to this website the T3100 is a 64 bit processor.

According to the MINIMUM specifications of Windows 7, you need AT LEAST 1GB just to run the 32 bit version but since it makes sense to use the 64 bit version (because you have a 64 bit processor), the MINIMUM specification is 2GB RAM.

From this, it shocks me to see systems with only 1GB of RAM and using Windows 7 (regardless of whether it's 32bit or 64bit). The bare minimum specifiactions is just enough to run Windows and will result in a slugglish system unless you turn off most of the pretty visuals which sort of defeats the purpose of using Windows 7 in the first place!

I can't repeat what I have been told (can't remember it!),but a friend of ours works in comuting-in fact he works in the Mayor's IT dept London and sorts all their computer problems out. He has told me that Windows 7 will run perfectly fine on 1gb and that in fact it is designed to run on smaller memory as it somehow only uses some parts at a time. Did I mention I know nothing about computers lol?! It made sense to me when he explained it anyway and he told me to go ahead and order the SAMSUNG 1GB when my card arrives (I have only had my entitlement letter so far.)
BTW my ex is running windows 7 on his Samsung netbook,1gb,with no problems.
It has been a long process for me. For some reason my son's name didn't appear on the national reg of children recieving free school meals. I had to get a letter stating he was getting free meals from his headmaster. They then wouldn't accept that letter as they hadn't stated the school was grant maintained (even though it had our local council etc all on the headed paper.) So a second letter had to be produced and SD paid as they refused to telephone the school to verify it's status. I am now waiting for the card etc and will be glad when it's sorted,as it took numerous phone calls after waiting over 5 weeks from return of documents to even ascertain what the hold up was-can I urge anyone for whom this drags on,please phone them and check, as if there is a problem like I had, they don't seem to contact you automatically, they just stick your application on the bottom of a pile. At least by phoning I was able to find out what I needed to do to get the whole process moving again.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

Just spend ages reading all this thread. Wrote a longish reply then shut the page...doh!

Anyway, can't be bothered to rewrite, so in short, Thanks to OP, sorry those that don't qualify and lastly...

Is Open Office anything like Microsoft Office?
Does Netthingy come with all packages, regardless whom you order from?
And lastly, are they all free P&P?

    Think that was it!

It depends what you call fine, if you know what it feels like to use Windows 7 with 1GB of RAM, it may seem fine but if you then use a machine with 4GB of RAM.... you're going to see a difference in speed. I am not saying Windows 7 will not run with 1GB of RAM, I am just saying the bare minimum is pretty dissapointing and I would have expected cheap laptops to come with 1GB of RAM 5 years ago, not in 2010.

I applied for the 2GB Samsung, it should arrive in a few days. Wish you the best!
