  • BG are are putting profits from customers into investment, not as bad as paying shareholders but they and you shouldn't be shouting from the rooftops about that.

Most companies have shareholders any business is in it to make money. SSE almost always post higher profits than BG do.

However remember a huge chunk of this money will come from BGS and not just BGE.

Its a whole different market but the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury Profits make energy companys profits look small.

I do agree with what you say.

I did notice someone say BG were just playing catch up with other suppliers this may be true for gas for there Electric has been competitive since last May. This is the first time since privatisation that BG have been the cheapest for standard gas.

They have increased the Cap on Gas DD discount, which is good for a high user like me, but if youare a typical user it won't effect you.

    i get a discount of 0.003 of a p. on my band b

    every little helps

In my area standard prices pre price cut vs WebSaver 5 looks like this:

    Standard T1 7.203ppkwh vs WS5 T1 5.678ppkwh - A difference of 1.525ppkwh or a 21% discount against the standard tariff.

    Standard T2 3.632ppkwh vs WS5 T2 2.686ppkwh - A difference of 0.946ppkwh or a 26% discount against the standard tariff.

It seems that Standard Tariff is a high figure plucked out of the air by BG to make all the other tariffs look cheaper.
Why would anyone be on ST?

Most of the country is on Standard tariffs. If it wasn't for Standard tariffs 5 out of the 6 suppliers would be out of business.

Because many people cant be bothered to switch, businesses rely on complacency from its customers

Many older people are not online and won't entertain doorstep sellers so will stick on the same tariff forever. Am going to sort my mother in law out this weekend!

Indeed there was also more trust between customers and utility companies, once there were only two you had no choice it was British Gas and local electric company like NEEB, YEB in my area (near boundary)

I understand it hard to get parents to change I have this problems myself my mother wont switch and always uses BT for phones, and dont get me started on her using a pvr a VHS video is all she wants

All these providers are just trying to bambozzle Joe Public with all their different tariffs.
Not a week goes by without one of them bringing out a new tariff simply to put them top of the comparison sites "best buys".
It`s a constant ongoing affair with the comparison sites getting paid by the energy companies to get people to change providers.

    Competition
    what competition!

"What I want to know is how to get a five year fixed tariff."

That has its own problems, BG I beleive DID have a five year fixed rate tariff, some customers went onto it just before the price reductions started and somehow felt wronged. I would agree with the customers if they were pressured, or if it was suggested by BG that prices would continue to rise.

But in the absence of that its just the perils of a fixed rate I'm afraid. What we do know is across all suppliers the online offering is about £300 per annum less than the standard price. Therefore everyone here at least should be on an onlin tariff.

Join a cashback site who split the commission with you. I got £40 for joining NPower. For the moment the tariff I am on has a modest tie in of £20 per fuel. Depending on a the qualifying period I reckon I could get credits totally about a third of my annual bill in a year.

I think you'd only get it once per supplier though.
