I don't know if the OP will ever be back but for what it's worth I would NOT let it lie. when the next bill comes in I would ask her to pay the extra, or give her the option of having shorter showers or paying more towards electric. I have very long showers for what it's worth but me and OH pay all the bills here. Under someone else's roof I would be flexible.

Also not just principle of electric, for your and the lodger's sake I would talk about it, it obviously affected you and she will have no idea. I am getting in the habit of sharing tales of my past (blame it on the lambrini) but due to going to uni through clearing, my first few weeks were in lodgings instead of halls and me and another lodger had all kinds of problems with the LL - but the solution to all of them was him telling us what he wanted!!! e.g. (before Sky+) he would get mad if we turned off video he had set to tape - but he didn't tell us, would get mad if we were using washing machine when he wanted it, he didn't tell us, annoyed if we came in late or if he got up early and we lounged around...... would offer to cook dinner but not mention time and then get mad, would have friends round and be mad if we were in (can distinctly remember my first saturday afternoon at uni was spent surrounded by 40 somethings sat on a sofa with "cans" in).........it only lasted a few weeks until i decided to leave but i still maintain the root of every problem he had was not him being unreasonable, it was his house - it was him not telling us! You don't want it to turn into resentment. Hope the OP gets to read this x

This is why I don't live with people!

It's funny, though...I would have less of an issue with the cost, and more of an issue with wasting water and energy. But if you live with others you have to be tolerant and compromise, and that's why I won't do it!

Interesting to hear about other people's usage, though!

3 min showers and the bath has to be used by at least 2 people otherwise its too expensive. Hair washes - 1 sink of water.

Takes me about 10 minutes to have a shower...I only really shower in the summer, I take baths in the winter for my joints.

I don't have hot water, only cold in my shower because I use it to cool down and wash at the same time, as it's cold, it gives me the incentive to not hang about! Shaving is done prior to getting in the shower (without the water running), washing hair takes 5 mins at most and I turn the shower off when lathering my hair...same as if I condition with a seperate product, shower off while lathering and waiting for it to take effect.

I have longish hair and can't think why 20 minutes would be needed.

If you count all of the time, including shaving before your shower, would that not take 20 mins? I couldn't shave my legs out of the shower, and I'd actually rather go without a shower and smell, than to have a cold one :rotfl:

I've never really thought about how long I take in the shower before, but I do turn it on full blast hot to warm the cubicle up first for 5 minutes, been known to forget about it and leave it half an hour before :rotfl:

Im glad im not the only one who does this.
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

  • Hi, ive recently taken in a new lodger, she's lovely but one flaw is she loves to use electric! I have one of those electricity monitors and she thinks nothing of taking 20 minute showers in an electric shower, when she gets in the monitor goes from 8p per hour to £1.80! Now I dont want to sound like a nagging old git but that will put the electric bill up by a massive amount, which I honestly cannot afford, would you say I would be wrong to ask her to calm it down a bit or as a lodger would it be perfectly reasonable to consume as much as you like in normal usage? Dont want to offend you see but I am a bit worried!
Why don't you join her in the shower? 2 for the price of one, you'd know all about that scrooge.
  • I've had 2 showers already today and probably spent over 20 minutes in there already with another one to come before bedtime. Hope no-one is timing me or working out how much it costs.

Now if a lovely young girl wants to share to spread the cost, I'm happy to do so. The only thing is that we'll probably end up taking much more time :)

Turn the tap on after 10 mins.

Or get a shower timer. You might be too late for this lodger but the next one you'll know to up the electric costs for.
