Wow, I spend 3 minutes in the shower, max. I hate wasting water. I lived in Australia for a while, and we were always on level 4 water restrictions, so I got used to being super-efficient.

I really don't know what people do in the shower for 20 minutes, though - even with long hair to wash!! I don't shave my legs unless they're going to be on display, but even so, I wouldn't need a 20 minute shower to do that every day! To each their own, I guess!
As the OP has clearly said a couple of times, this is a favour for a friend, hence the low rent. OP - I would let it go for now, but increase the rent to standard rate (your £350 a month) to include the higher cost of bills at the end of the 8 weeks, and make sure she knows that will happen.
And although I don't spend anywhere near that long in a shower, I wouldn't mention to a girl about the time spent with the shower on; if it were me, I'd be wondering how you knew and if you were listening, watching etc!
Hope it sorts itself out.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
I think the first 5 minutes I'm not actually in the shower, I'm brushing my teeth etc while it gets hot. The the next 5 mins wake me up lol so I suppose the actual washing, shaving etc takes around 10 minutes. I am quicker though when my hair doesn't need washing lol.
OP, do you think it's likely your lodger plans to stay longer than originally mentioned? If so you should really start dropping hints about the rent increasing or she will be in for a shock!

Just because you spend twenty minutes in the shower doesn't mean the water needs to be running the entire time! If it's a power shower a bath probably would use less water. If you are doing someone a favour rather than it being a commercial arrangement I don't see why you can't ask for your lodger to moderate her water use.
I'm very old and very naive. What on earth do people do if it takes them 20 minutes to shower ? I can't get my time to exceed 10 minutes
and it's five minutes if I need a quick shower. How dirty do people get in a day? How long does it take to wet, wash and rinse the human body? .................

I sometimes wish my teenage daughter would stay in the shower for only 20 minutes. She is more likely to be in there for half an hour or more. My younger son isn't much better although I suspect some of the time he is laying on the bathroom floor to delay getting ready for school. The water running is a tactic to make me think he is actually getting dressed.:rotfl::rotfl:0

Maybe you could set some sort of webcam up in the shower and do some sort of pay per view stream on the internet?
You should quite easily make back the cost of the electric.0 -
I agree with most of the women who have replied, I too take around 20 minutes. OH moans sometimes, but then I am the one who goes round turning off the lights that he leaves on

Why do you run the water for five minutes to get it hot? Do you have a stately home where the shower is half a mile from the boiler? If so can I come to stay? I don't shave I epilate, but when I did shave I turned the water off for most of the time as otherwise all the shaving gel gets washed away. I also turn the water off whilst shampooing or exfoliating, and use a leave-on conditioner.
Your showers will be costing a lot more than your OH leaving the lights on - even if you had twenty 50W halogen lamps that's only 1KWH, compared to up to an 8KWH power shower! :eek:Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Hehe nope no stately home here, just a little flat with pay as you go electric - the worst kind!! Well the shower has pretty much had it to be honest and our water pressure isn't very good so it takes a while for it to get going.£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit

Rented or owned? I also have an all-electric flat and a fabby pressurised thingumy bob (not the technical term!
) attached to my immersion heater. I can get a powerful shower with just a shower mixer tap on the bath. Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Squirrel - at least you know you're not washing in water that's been filtered through nine other people's bodies first
