Last night I recorded the Singer advert on Create and Craft with Debbie Shaw. I have just watched her take up a hem on a maxi dress! My god, it was the most awful sewing I have ever seen. I would die if my demonstration was that bad. Even as she was finishing it, she ran out of thread, and the fabric was bunching. I had to rewind the tv just to make sure i was seeing what I was seeing! I know that none of us would do that! She pretended that the dress was finished etc. Well there was at least 8" of it that the bottom thread had run out on for a start. (Now I do admit I have run out when I forgot to check the amount on the spool before sewing a seam) but really she should have said, oops i have run out, and shown how to change the bobbin there and then!!
I would be so embarrased to have even been filmed to show the camera close shots of the seam she was doing! Well I wouldnt sew it so badly in the first place!

sorry I am just so incensed. How did she become the "Queen of stithing". I KNOW that even our newbies on here can sew better then that demo!

Hmmm,so saw this sewing machine on ebay for £350 but then found it cheaper from here http://www.sewingworld.co.uk/Silver_9300E.html. What do you think? Or does anyone have this machine or know anyone who does? I want to use it for making clothes, bags, curtains etc.

I do not have this particular machine, but I do recommend Silver Viscount. Both of my main machines are Silver viscounts now.
Even though they are old now.
The service from the company is excellent. They will even arrange for collection and pick up for about £15 each way if you cannot get to them, and the last service I had was only £30-£35 for each machine.
In my case as one of the staff goes to the gym near my parents, he collected mine for free from the gym! Brilliant. What better service can you get.
(Oh and I made my wedding dress etc etc on their machines, and have had no major problems at all!).
    :D

evening ladies!! Any Brother uses around????

Finally cut up all my fabric and was ready to sew but my Mum's sewing machine has got all temperamental on me. For some reason the bobbin is not catching the top thread, the top thread just ends up wrapping itself round the bobbin case. I have rethreaded umpteen times, re-loaded the bobbin umpteen times but every time I try to sew I get a birds nest underneath and a jammed needle (have replaced that too!) I googled my Mums machine - Brother PS31 and it seems a common problem but I cant find a solution! GRRRRR!

I was really in the mood to sew tonight as it was the first chance I have had in ages. My Mum says that the machine is usually fine - if it plays up she plays with all the dials and it sort itself out!

It was working fine when I first used it, then I got her to fill & replace the bobin & top thread & since then it hasnt worked properly - wondering if soomething hasnt been re-set??? Like on my Bernina, you have to move the little spoke thing that you put the bobbin on to wind up, back to it's original postion - wondering if it is something simple like that? Also I can't find a tension knob/dial.

Time has stopped play :(. I've got half way through resewing my 5th block and have cleaned all the adhesive off the new tiling. DH won't go up into the loft to look for grout so I'll have to do that in the morning. He also won't get me the mitre out of the shed. Grr. Never mind.
Will try to get more sewing done tomorrow before I take the kids out. I at least want to finish block 5 and hopefully another one.

Hi Tamster :D I have a brother and it started playing up the other day so I took the bobbin case plate off and gave it a good clean out, you should have seen the fluff :o
After that it has run as good as before :D so maybe it just need a de-fluff :o its worth a try.

Claire :D your denim bag is fantastic :T:T

I just can't get motivated to sew just lately :( I don't know why but I did give all my fabric a big sort out and bagged lots up that I will want but not sure when and put it up stairs, maybe if I can declutter my stash I can think straight again (and have some space to sew :rotfl:)
I have to take DD to work today so I promised DS we will go out somewhere as I have done nothing with him this half term :o
I am going to have a go at making some of my star quilt squares later and see if I can get myself moving again :)
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

thanks Hart - I took out the bobbin holder AND managed to put it all back together and that seemed to do the trick and stopped the bird-nesting.
The machine must of taken a little knock or something (easy enough with my two running around!) Still having tension problems though - the bobbin thread is too lose. HAve found the tension dial but don't seem to be getting anywhere...should I be going towards the + or - to tighten the bobbin?? I never remember.

Shame about the DS dress Irishgirl. I remember my mum knitting me a crop top for Christmas one year, My fav colour is red but I am yet to see a nice shade of red knitting wool, think I wore it once on Christmas Day and then it sat in my Wardrobe for at least 10 years as I couldn't bring myself to charity shop it!
