That's the book I bought for my 12 year old grandaughter when she decided she wanted to learn to sew. It's quite a comprehensive book and easy to follow and it doesn't 'talk down' to you if you know what I mean0

With regard to sewing books I love to look at online sites and my books are so old that they do not have how to insert an invisible zipper! But some of the techniques I have seen on line leave a little to be desired as the writers are obviously self taught.
For example. Gathering. Often on line it will be suggested that you put in a line of long stitch length stitching and use this to gather. However most books and teachers will tell you to put in two lines one fractionally above the seam line and another within the seam allowance. This is because you have more control over the gathers (and if one bobbin thread breaks as you pull up you have a spare line of gathering to use!).
I think that books and online sites are useful. Online sites are up to date and visual and I really like looking at the items people have made. But consulting a book can be very quick, convenient (next to my m/c) and you have an authoritative description of methods that have been refined over the years.

Just got back from the weekend at BF's. I managed to cut out the paper pattern for an outfit for DGD, and unpick/and cut a duvet cover up, so I will have a patterned and plain fabric to make the outfit from, but back was too sore to do any more then that.! Maybe tomorrow I will get the pinning out done.
My issue no 4 of Simply Homemade has arrived while I have been away, so I am off to dip into that one.!
I made luggage tags last year, and printed the labels on the computer. That was the first time I tried to print onto fabrics.
I will need to make new ones for next year, as the destination hopefully will be different, and the home address already is!.
(thats if we get a holiday of course.).
Lost my mobile phone while away, so another expense looming tomorrow. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
