My pleasure, have you had a play with it yet? I haven't touched mine for weeks, although I've got 3 quilts on the go.

The butterfly quilt is gorgeous, but as a learner myself this time last year, if you've never made a quilt before it's best to start with a simple, basic one, like all squares. I know that if I had started one like the butterfly, I'd be fine as long as it all went together swimmingly, but as soon as I hit a problem I would have thrown it in a cupboard and never gone back to it!

Take your time and have a practice sewing squares together, maybe just make a cushion cover to start with. I started off this time last year with every intention of making my first quilt a king-sized one! I've now downsized it to a single bed size and that's taken me a year to piece that! (mind you, I have started others in between, and done other crafts).

So, have a practice first, and then show us the gorgeous finished butterly quilt maybe in the summer!

I haven't had a play yet but OH says he will go over the setting up and everything with me this weekend as he used to watch both his Mum & Dad sew. Can't wait :D

To those quilters amongst us... there must be more to quilting than meets the eye... I mean... it looks so simple!
I have OOOOOODLES of clothes that have minor damage or just don't fit me anymore - worthless secondhand as nothing posh branded but I can't bring myself to just freecycle it all... And some of the baby clothes from my daughter I just can bear to give up :)
Could i just cut it all into similar size squares, sew it up and put a backing on it and Fred's your aunt?

I do my cusion cover at the wkend and my granny squares when I get home from work in the evenings while looking on here (I find it relaxing lol).

I brought a load of ready cut square off ebay and then looked in charity shops for duvet covers I could cut up myself.

What a great idea to use the clothes too :)
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

I so agree with you about it looking so simple! I made a lap quilt for my mum for Christmas and backed it with a fleece blanket. I thought it would be a doddle, I was quilting it by hand and just tacked the fleece onto the pieced top. Evidently you are meant to lay the backing on the floor/table, and tape it down to put the pieced bit on. I didn't do this: I then tacked it all on and it looked nice and flat, but when I came to do the hand quilting, I got lots of rucks and pleats where it wasn't laying flat. When I started last January I thought I would be churning out one quilt a month, but in reality I've finished one lap quilt, have a single bed sized one that needs a border and then basting/quilting/binding, and 2 others as "works in progress". I look at American quilter's blogs and they have lists of quilts they've finished that year! As I say, I'm still learning!

Yes, you could certainly make a quilt from all the clothes, lots of people do that as memory quilts. Would be a nice memento of baby stuff too. Anything's possible in the world of quilting! One of the things on my list is to make a quilt out of vintage bed sheets, I saw that on one of the blogs. Using old sheets, which can be bought in charity shops quite cheaply. If you bought 4 ot 5 different patterned ones you could probably get a few quilts out of them!

  • loopychriss, i know how you feel about basting etc, my first quilt came out very lumpy and squint cos i hadn't bothered to tack it properly, i made a long quilted table runner before christmas and followed this method for basting/tacking and it worked a treat..i didn't have the bits of wood she has, so i improvised and used 2 off cuts of the laminate flooring!!:)

I have just completed my very 1st piece of patchwork but luckly it is a cusion cover so didnt need basting :), I would not say it was perfect but not bad for my 1st attempt (well I like it lol).

I have just got to put the matching cover together then I will post a pic of them (made them for my mum's birthday) :D

As I get better I do plan to make a bed cover so this youtube link will help loads :D

Thank you for this, I shall give it a go with the lap quilt I've got made. I did baste the backing and wadding onto it, but now I know I've got a couple of things wrong, I'll unpick the tacking and do it again. (I have cut the wadding and backing to the size of the quilt front, not realising that when quilting it 'shrinks' back, so I need to cut the backing and wadding bigger than the front).
