  • Finally started my adventure into patchwork. Here is the front of a cushion Im making. Got a few queries about it which Ive put on my blog if anyone wants to pop over and help me!!

That's lovely - gorgeous colours and your squares are so neat! One thing I have never been good at is patchwork - I once made a cushion with nine large squares and none of them lined up so it look a bit odd!!!

I haven't been to the Singer shop. As far as I know there are 2 shops in that area, the one I think you are referring to and also one on Sandy Row. Must check them out. Luckily my work colleague has the same hobbies and interests as me so we spend our lunch breaks either crafting or shopping (for crafts) I work in Belfast so will try to get to those places soon.. I'll let you know. Will you be going to the Stitch and Creative craft show in the Kings Hall in April? I am really looking forward to it. Spent hours and many £s there last year.

If you are a reasonably standard shape and have chosen a simple pattern I'd be inclined to use the real fabric. When cutting out, remember that you can easily take in a dress that's too big, but if you cut it too small you're stuck. I have always been too impatient to use a toile, but I can see that it could be a confidence booster, or a Horrible Object Lesson that spares you making mistakes on the real thing.

Thanks for the reply - I'd already started my toile before I saw your reply. I tell you, it's a bl00dy good job I did, or that real fabric would be absolutely filthy from being thrown on the floor so often!

I thought it was supposed to be a simple pattern, but I've had to unpick three times! It should only have been two, but I accidentally unpicked the wrong bit

I was planning on making a dress to wear for my friend's wedding in June, but if I might have to rethink that ;)

    Pootle, love your cushion!

I went to the Knitting and Stitching (think this is what it was called?) Show at the great yorkshire showground in Harrogate about four years ago - sadly it was the last one they had there as it moved to Birmingham and instead of being a quick 45 mins away it would be a good four hours now so haven't been since:(

I went on my own so I could do exactly as I pleased and it was great, I spoke to a few people and shared tables with some ladies at lunchtime as well as watching the fashion shows and spending quite a bit (only about half still unused but packed away safely for a rainy day;)).

Now the twins are a bit older I would love to go again but don't fancy that commute!! I am going to google now to see what else I can find but if anyone has any ideas for local to Teesside shows please can you let me know? I only went the once as I was pregnant the year after.

I was absolutley amazed at the things people made - a girls had made a bodice with a lace overlay and handsewn flowers between the layers, it was so gorgeous - I want to get into making nice and quirky things for the girls as they grow up.
