Rufus; It wasnt free hand embroidery, had to keep moving the material around. Like you am going to have a go with a hoop, lower the feed dog and see how I get on. Bet it takes a lot of practise to perfect. Would really love an embroidery machine and a quilting machine and.....and!!

    I've asked Santa for loads
Tone Finnegar - Sew Pretty Homestyle, Tildas Christmas Ideas, Sew Pretty Christmas Homestyle
Clothes - Using patterns, Patternmaking, Simple Sewing, Weekend Sewing, Amy Butler, Sewing in No Time

of course I have no idea what they are like as Santa hasn't brought them yet, but thats what I fancy. I'm trying to learn to make my own clothes patterns but other than that just general sewing, trying to get brave enought to try a quilt!!!

wow hun - thank you and thanks for all those links - really kind of you - the tone finnegar books look adorable - I borrowed a couple recently and thought they were absolutely gorgeous - just a bit in awe of the work inside them and being a complete beginner - their figures especially intimidate me - haven't got a lot of confidence yet - but even just for browsing through - they are gorgeous. I actually made a gift bag though from one of them and it came out well so maybe I should stop putting myself down and go for it - they sure are beautiful books without any question.
The Sewing in NO Time one looks like it may be a go-er at the mo ..it looks fab - am browsing through all that you have kindly linked - I had my friends machine out every evening for a while and was gaining confidence and then with one thing and another I haven't had chance and that little bit of confidence has done a disappearing act - maybe I should order one of those beautiful books and make myself give it another go - much appreciated!!!! xxxxx

I have a Brother machine and to do the quilting I bought aa free motion foot and then you put a darning plate on to cover the feed dogs. I'ts then a case of practising and putting up with arm ache from holding the material taught. You can do what ever you like but what I find the most difficult is keeping all 3 layers together. Lady from local shop swears by 505 spray instead of safety pins but to be honest my back still got in a mess so next one i may try pins.

Midge your cushion covers are lovely. I've got some spray on glue and use that for holding my applique pieces in one place which I found better than pins personally. Will have to look at getting a foot.

Its brilliant (and half price on Amazon ;))

Cuddles, I had a sewing tutorial at my local sewing machine shop yesterday and they said to buy 505 glue if temporarily attaching embroidery stabiliser to applique pieces. I have cheap stuff from poundshop and they told me not to use it as it would make the applique sit differently before I sewed it. I have bought that wondaweb/vilene type stuff thats double sided which works really well. Its like interfacing but fuseable on both sides. They recommended that too.
