Pennib So far I have only totally finished one quilt - the green and blue one. The lady in the shop talked me into buying the cotton stuff. I really like it - it makes such a cosy quilt. I have three quilt tops ready to quilt and 2 more to make but I haven't decided what to use either. Mainly because of the cost £10 for cotton or £3 for poly!
I did a "finishing your first quilt" course at TikkiLondon a few weeks ago. On my course the tutor said she nearly always uses cotton or cotton blend wadding for quilts and poly for hangings, because over time it wears better and poly can "beard" through the fabric. She also said poly was harder to quilt. Another thing she said to think about was how you would use the quilt, if it was just as decoration on your bed then anything, but if you were to sleep with it then cotton/cotton blend as you would need to wash it more often and natural fibres are better next to your body than synthetic. But you only get that fluffy look with poly (although that settles done with use and washing.)
Some of the people on my course did their sample piece by hand and some (like me) machine quilted. The overall effect from handquilting does imo "add" something to the finished quilt. I think as you have some handstitching it would really compliment your quilt if your did some hand quilting. I am far too much of a lazy crafter and like to see quick results so it is machine quilting for me all the way! :rotfl:0 -
Hi all - I have been lurking for a few days and trying to read through all the posts. What amazing work you all do!!! I am totally inspired and can feel my crafting fingers itching again after quite a while.
That said I have my first patchwork quilt to finish and I was handquilting it but I am getting curious about machine quilting and as Tamster has raised the subject I wanted to ask about it. Is it just a matter of sewing the quilt through the machine as normal or are there special quilting rules?

I am really a novice when it comes to quilting but I went to the Festival of Quilts in August in Birmingham and it was amazing. I think I will always stick to fairly simple stuff (I'm a girl of simple tastes!) but it seems that machine quilting can be anything from straight lines following a simple geometric pattern along the main blocks to amazingly complicated swirling patterns all over the quilt. This 'free motion quilting' can be very intricate but I personally find it too much.
If you google it there are many, many demos, so worth a look. I am just stitching in straight lines, following the lines where I have joined my blocks and quite happy with how that is turning out for the moment.
