Does that sound like I've threaded it wrong or just that the material was more than it could handle?

    Check you've threaded it correctly.

Is the foot raised when you thread the machine? (This opens the the tension disc's.) The needle bar should be up too.

Is the bobbin inserted correctly and the thread through the correct slot? Is the bobbin unevenly wound?

    Is the needle in correctly?

Heavy fabrics require more tension. Alter the tension and sew a test sample

Hi All! Im not having much fun... Bought one of those cheap mini sewing machines cos I wanted to start out with a few bits and bobs and really cant afford anything better. I've had a go at a little drawstring bag today. Was going well but then on the outer material (thick hessian type) it all went wrong! I'm hoping its just because the material is too thick but basically what happened was it was stitching and the underneath bit looked like the stitches had just gone over and over some I had a big mess and tangle going on. Does that sound like I've threaded it wrong or just that the material was more than it could handle? I did a cotton liner first and that was fine then did 2 sides of the outer bit fine then it messed up.

Could just be the hesian catching because of the weave and the material isn't feeding through correctly. So it's just over sewn a bit, it has happened to me a couple of times with different kinds of material. Check to make sure your threads that you start sewing are to one side or you have hold of them initially as they can get caught up also, especially the lower one.

I'll check all those things and see how it goes. I haven't used a sewing machine since I was as school (ah hum 11 years ago!!) so have been a bit clueless :o
I may have to do the hessian bit by hand if all else fails. Not too worried about that, it is a trickier fabric than I expected but the effect should be nice.
    Glad I've found this thread!
