Emzy 81 - if you post pictures of your makes I'm sure someone will advise.
Well done on having a go!

Cuddles123, you're gingerbread men are too cute :). I would like to have a go at making them myself. I love the idea of them being cinnamon scented!

Thanks for the advice guys I am leaning towards the more expensive machine as it does seem to have a lot more on it and Im sure I will grow into it!

Definitely if you can afford it - go for the best you can afford because if you bought a cheaper one which does less, pretty soon you will wish you'd bought the all-singing, all-dancing one! When I win the next Euromillions multi-million pound jackpot (:rotfl:) I'll invest in a really good machine.

Last year I forked out over £200  for a Husqvarna Viking Emerald and I can honestly say it's one of the best decisions I've ever made (well I say I forked out, actually it was DH's birthday present to me, but as all the money comes out of a joint account and I researched, chose and bought it, it comes to the same thing!;))

I had previously had a cheap machine and spent more time fiddling with it and re-threading it and messing with the tension than I did sewing, and it got to the point where sewing became a chore, not a pleasure, and ever time I tried to make something I ended up stressed and angry.

My beautiful new one does everything faultlessly, doesn't go loopy and makes sewing a relaxing pleasure.

Go for the very best you can afford and keep your blood pressure down! :rotfl:
Oh dear, here we go again.
  • Hi All,

Some lovely stuff being made folks. Cuddles, I love your gingerbread men. Im making some just now too (and gingerbread houses) but havent quite got round to finishing them yet!

Ive almost finished my latest handmade Xmas gift (just a few minor bits to finish off.) Similar to my fat cat but this time its a big bunny rabbit and I think he is even cuter!!!

    What do you think ladies?

Although I know it will take me an age to get as good as any of you - local college evening classes here I come I think!!!

I am sorry hun I missed this the other day - I think the 20 is the one that I played with in the shop on Friday - it was lovely - felt really quite solid - sewed beautifully - its such a hard choice isnt it - good luck with whichever one you choose but I think the 20 if you can do it - is the better one - but they will both be good I think - being Brother!

Hya Emmamumof2, thought you would like to see this ...the machine you want, but with loads of extras!! A few folk recommend this site...and if I ever feel the need for a new machine, I will certainly go there.

I got my machine when we lived in Holland in 1986 - a Lewenstein (Dutch make), which has done great service over the years...it has never needed mending and I have used it almost every month I have had it! It does only a few different stitches...enough for my needs...though I drool over the fancy ones I have looked at lately!! :D

Off to sit down and do some knitting...asthma's bad today, so not up to getting much else done.
    :(

Good luck to all those machine-hunting!

  • Hi All! Im not having much fun... Bought one of those cheap mini sewing machines cos I wanted to start out with a few bits and bobs and really cant afford anything better. I've had a go at a little drawstring bag today. Was going well but then on the outer material (thick hessian type) it all went wrong! I'm hoping its just because the material is too thick but basically what happened was it was stitching and the underneath bit looked like the stitches had just gone over and over some I had a big mess and tangle going on. Does that sound like I've threaded it wrong or just that the material was more than it could handle? I did a cotton liner first and that was fine then did 2 sides of the outer bit fine then it messed up.
