    Hi all,

I've not yet got my sewing machine out this year (heavy old Singer that needs more space than I possess atm) but have a growing pile of making and mending projects to do when I decide to go for it. Meantimes, I'm washing and ironing my stash of fabric which still smells a bit fusty after having been in store after our house move a year ago and I've been doing some tiny patchwork projects.

I'm hoping to produce some clothes/craft-type stuff to sell and I'd like to find the answer to whether there is a legal problem in using commercially available patterns to do this. If I couldn't use a pattern as it stands, would it be OK to modify it a bit, ie change the pockets or neckline, then sell it because it would incorporate some of my design?

    Many thanks
    B x

I could be wrong but I think when you buy a commercial pattern you are effectivly buying a license to produce 1 item (or realistically a couple of items) but purely for personal use. There are some bloggers (Rae for example) that sell patterns with a license to sell the items. Having said that it is very difficult to prove that an item is 100% the product of X designer, especially if you change things as you mention, it hard to measure what has been inspired by another piece of work, and what has been plagarised.

As for whether its ethical thats for you to decide......

Just ordered a copy of Lisa's (from U Handbag) book from Amazon. RRP is £13.99 plus P&P but they doing it for £7.50 with free delivery. Given my bag making obsession (and I also love Lisas patterns as well as her blog!!), I cant wait for it to arrive!

    Hi Cuddles :D
    I used this tutorial http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2008/09/storage-cubes.html

It is nice and easy to do, I made my sides and bottom 8inches as I wanted it a bit bigger and I put some card in the bottom before sewing it up. I used some curtain material I brought and the curtain liner for the inside :D
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

  • Thanks Hart = will give that a go.
Did you stiffen the sides with anything?

Made a few Tissue Holders as they are a good test for my new machine - sewed through 8 layers no problem!

  • Hello everyone, just catching up on about a month's worth of the thread - lots of lovely fabric and makes flying about! Specially love that bag and your daughter's big grin Justamum!
I have a book obsession! I have been lovingly informed that I mustn't buy any more books until I get rid of some. But I can't get rid of old friends (Books!)

Have you seen this thread? ;)

I want to make THESE reusable shopping bags, but where can I buy the webbing for the handles from?

I've seen this stuff in Boyes so I'm sure most haberdashers will stock it?

Not been sewing much as I'm trying to teach myself to crochet (and can do that in front of the telly :o), but I did make a tiny owl for my Granny from a tweed skirt - inspired by 23rdSpiral's Hoot from months ago - remember?

Some more pics on my blog :)

Hope you feel better soon Pooky :(

Your tissue holders are brill :D I think I will make some for extra xmas prezzies :D

I didn't put the card in the sides of my fabric box as I want to store bits of fabric in it but I will put it in the others I plan to do as it helps keep them square looking and I want more to store my patterns in :D

Love the little owl :T it's sooooo cute :D

Haha, thanks! That's a fantastic idea for all those people who buy books and don't read them!

I've read all of mine though... I just can't get rid of them. What I need is an enforced book swap.... or another book shelf. I don't even like putting them in boxes and popping the boxes in my cupboard. Books need to be enjoyed! x
  • Thanks Hart :)

I know what you mean TMIF - I have almost 200 books (not including reference ones - they're OK!) half read, and half unread, can't bear to part with any of them. Just looking at their spines makes me happy!

I followed this tutorial http://vintagericrac.blogspot.com/2008/01/1-hour-bag-tutorial.html and made this:

It was easy to follow and make, so I think I'm going to make a couple to sell on my Minerva Crafts Folksy page
