Glad you've got yourself sorted out.

I'm a member of the Embroiderers' Guild too - you don't have to be expert at anything to join (I'm certainly not! :rotfl:) but they usually have workshops where you can try different crafts out. I've been on quite a few. Some I would love to keep doing, others I've not been so keen on. It's a lovely day of escape from the family too! :D

We have a few craft clubs/societies locally but I don't think I'll be joining them any time soon. Unfortunately they are all full of ladies who are about 80 years old. It's a shame because there is an embroidery guild, quilting group and weavers that I know of. I know there is nothing stopping me going but I just don't think I could do it, lol. :o

That's a shame really as there is a lot of skills there, tricks and techniques you could learn.

I sew, knit, crochet etc and I have no-one to pass my skills onto and sometimes I wish there was some-one I could teach. :(

Now looking at a Brother BC2100 or BC2500.
In the best MSE tradition, I'm looking for a bargain!

I bought the BC2100 from these people:

    http://www.sewingmachines.co.uk/brotherbc2100_info.htm.

Had no problems with delivery as I am BFPO and the free threads/scissors etc are fab. Check out the deal on the ES2020 £159
same spec as the B2100 but has the needle threader. I was going to get that one but the offer had ended, but very happy with my purchase so far.

I've only been away a day and the thread is flooded with such lovely things! Jennieshrew's playmat, Tete's fabulous apron and Mollymunchkin's taggie blanket, all absolutely fantastic and SOOOO much nicer than any in the shops.

Can I ask a question that will sound really stupid - I don't have any babies in the family at the mo so I'm not up with the latest things - what are taggie blankets for? I've seen a lot on ebay etc but not with explanations. If they are just for babies to hold, don't they get their fingers tangled in the ribbons?
Oh dear, here we go again.

I think they like the feel of the satin-type ribbon, I remember when I was little I used to love stroking the tag on a blanket I had, so I think that's the idea. I'm toying with making something like that for a friend who has just found out she's pregnant (for the baby obviously not her!) but I'm not sure whether they are as popular as they're made out to be?

When my middle son was born all he loved to do was stick his fingers through the holes in the crochet blankets he used. if he was feeling a bit upset or distressed this really used to help calm and relax him. even in bed he would do with while asleep. so i'd imagine t is the same sort of principle. the tags( ie ribbon) would be soft and comforting for baby to fiddle with.

Dont let the ladies ages put you off :), sometimes you can learn a lot more from them as they were taught all these skills from an early age. My nan taught me to crochet as my mum was working all the time. I would love to have something like that around here as I can get by on the basics but would love to take quilting further but Im not sure how :o.

Pootle, my box needs a good clean up and I think I will line the inside, even with this box I still could do with more storage :rotfl:

Danemi, so pleased your sewing machine is sorted :).

tete, if you had given me the apron I would have asked where did you buy it, you have made it beautifully :D.

PG, Ive not done tapestry but I do a lot of embroidery and not sure why cross stitchers prefer DMC to Anchor, mybe it has a better clour range, I use what ever is available :rotfl:. Hope your back is a little better :)

Time is running again. I will check in again later and keep up the beautiful work everyone :D
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

Thanks - have looked there. Unfortunately I need the needle threader or I would have gone for that model.
It really is quite a big decision, so I'm going to mull it over for a bit longer and keep an eye on prices I think.
:oJack of all trades ... Master of none :o
  • When I made my taggie blankie I made sure there was lots of different types of ribbon (velvet, silky feel, organza, grosgrain) and different widths. I was a bit sceptical about them and so never made one for my son 5 years ago but my niece loves it. They just like to fiddle with the ribbons, it helps calm them down apparently.

The ES2020 has the needle threader and is £159, £20 cheaper than the B2100
