I've failed at the first hurdle :o(

My neighbour was good enough to let me borrow her spare sewing machine while I decide whether I like sewing enough to buy a decent one myself.

I bought fabric and wadding to make baby quilts, switched the sewing machine on and....nothing. Well, not nothing, there's power going through it but it's not making the needle move. I've fiddled with the tension(?) dial but it doesn't make any difference. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be? Thanks. x

Maybe check if there is any thread etc stuck where you bobbin goes just incase its jamming something. Does the needle move if you manually turn the dial on the side or is it totally stuck?

Try checking the power lead is in properly. If that is ok make sure any access covers to the bobbin and other bits are shut properly. My overlocker wont work if the hinged cover isn't shut properly.

The other thing is some machines have a button to switch them on and off. Try hunting for a switch if you haven't already.

It moves up and down when turned with the dial, not as much as I would expect though?

Has the inner wheel inside the big wheel been loosened off as you need to for bobbing winding?

I really didn't know how to write that but I hope it makes sense. :o

Thanks for suggesting this, I opened the cover and the thread was stuck in the bobbin, loosened it off and it works fine. Just got to rethread the blasted thing. Thanks again.

At a quick glance - does the bobbin click onto the top post? If so try looping the thread from the reel through the loop before the tension disc and then up to the bobbin on the top post.

    Do you have a make?

Edit: Probably not having looked again. :o

I there something that could go into the front circle to put the bobbin on. That looks more likely.

If all else fails you could get something like this.
