Hello all, just catching up a bit with the thread after a holiday, don't think I've shown you the maxi dress I made myself before I went away:
Alas, I finished it in a bit of a rush so I could take it away, then when I got there I didn't want to wear it as it still needs some adjustments, but never mind, hopefully I'll feel in the mood to alter it sometime soon.
In the middle of making an apron for a friend's birthday (to go with a cupcake recipe book) - it's the one that was in Sew magazine a couple of issues ago. I added a lining myself and am really pleased with how it's turning out so far ... watch this space.
NatC - love those boxes, what a lovely OH you have! I've been after a vintage cantilever sewing box, and asked my granny if she still had hers, she didn't but took it upon herself to buy me a brand new one from Argos. Bless her, but it's not what I wanted at all, it has no soul! And can't fit much in either. I mentioned this to OH's mam and she went out and bought me the most battered old thing you can imagine from a flea market and I was over the moon! OH thinks we're both mental, but don't they say that all men end up marrying their mothers?Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -

Hi I've never posted here before but as someone with very basic sewing skills I am after some advice.
Today I cut an old pair of torn jeans into shorts and am left with the two legs. I was considering trying to make a bag out of them. I was thinking a basic envelope shape with one leg and using the other to make a strap. I have some lining material left over from relining a coat last winter so could use that too. Basically I want to know if I am being too ambitious for a beginner and if anyone has any tips before I start.
Thanks for any help.0 -

Tete, your dress looks lovely. What's making you not want to wear it?
Elaine, I don't know how to do links but if you google bag from jeans (or jeans legs) you should get lots coming up.0 -
yes love that dress Tete - it looks great, what pattern did you use?
Elainem - maybe try google images "jean bag" you might find a link to a tutorial.
I am still here lurking & enjoying seeing all of your makes. I just wanted to let everyone know that I have finally added all of my makes to my blog! (yippee!) hopefully I will be able to keep on top of my blogging now as I have been on the computer all evening when I would rather be on the sewing machine! lol! I havent even had the time to read all of your blogs and update myself with your progress! lol!0 -

Elaine, you could make an apron (link here) There are loads of tutes on how to make bags but thats normally using the top part of the jeans rather than the legs. It would be simple enough though. Cut one of the legs in half so you have 2 pieces of material the same size, put right sides together and stitch round 3 sides (same with your lining). Turn your denim right way round (leave lining wrong way round) Cut the other leg into strips and stitch to make a handle. Pin the handle to the outside of the denim (with about a quarter inch sticking up over top of each side). Put your denim inside your lining (tuck the handle inside lining and make sure its not twisted) Sew round the top leaving about a 6" gap for turning. Turn right way out, top stitch and voila. If you want to put a magnetic closure in your lining then perhaps you can do this before you stitch right round the top. Im typing this really quickly as I only had 5 minutes spare before I went to work so I hope it makes sense! If not tell me and I will explain better later!! :rotfl:
p.s Tete, love your dress!!!:D0
