Hi all. New to this thread...and to sewing really. I have a basic sewing machine -had it for about 17 years. But i can't really sew as such.
I would like to make some curtains-hopefully an easy start point. Any help / advice gratefully received. How hard can it be?
many thanks in anticipationGE 36 *MFD may 2043

really its not hard, the thing to remember is measure twice, cut once, theres a lot of fabric involved with curtains (obviously duh!) so you really don't want to get it wrong as it will cost you £££££!
Take it slowly and double check things and remember the sewing might be a bit bulky as curtain fabric is usually a little heavier than dressmaking (who ever wore curtain material apart from the Von Trapp children?) so don't panic!0 -
thanks for the links bunny200-they're brilliant. Just got to choose some fabric.GE 36 *MFD may 2043

Hello all, can I join in? I was referred by xxvickixx over on the shabby chic thread , yet another mammoth thread to keep up with  I'm currently on page 10, think it will be a little while before you hear from me again as I'll be catching up with everything else first, just wanted to pop in and say Hi.
I've made a few things by hand before but only on a small scale, hand stitching takes so long! However I found a tiny sewing machine at a car boot sale on Sunday for £3 so I snapped it up, looks perfect for me as I'm scared of the big type, I never got along with them in school and college and always managed to break it or tangle the thread up or something! This one looks nice and simple for me
I already have a list of things I want to make -
Shabby chic stuffed hearts and sock monkeys for Christmas fairs, a patchwork quilt using free fabric samples and scraps and little mouse shaped cat toys to send off to a cat charity for them to sell in their online shop. Think I might do a cushion or two first to get the hang of it again though

Scarlett O'Hara.

And Lawrence Lewellyn Bowen!
Hart you lucky thing getting that book, and the fabric you bought is brilliant for the price!
I have been making little sewing needle cases from this months sew hip magazine. I quite like that mag it's better than the sew mag, and cheaper too!
This is what I made, it was really simple to do, just two circles of fabric folded into a hex shape with felt inside. I made several in different fabrics but can't show the others yet as they are for presents
These ones were made from the leftover scraps from a Boden top I bought from the charity shop and cut up to make a tote bag, so double MSE.

Actually I'm in the middle of making a skirt from a 70s curtain
And am planning a skirt and top from an old 80s duvet set.
I find this woman on Flickr very inspirational, she makes clothes from sheets, tablecloths etc
