  • Hi everyone. I want to have a go at making a softie but I don't know how to embroider a face on once it has been stuffed. How do I make sure that the knots don't show, etc. I wonder if anyone has got any good tips or come across a tutorial I can follow?

    Thanks :D

    Hello everyone!

I'm a long time lurker of this thread. You have all given me so much inspiration that I regularly get the sewing machine out and have a go! I am teaching myself so I'm nowhere near as skilled as you but have managed to run up some cushion covers and found a bargain pair of curtains at the weekend in the Dunelm sale for my daughers bedroom. The problem was that they were eyelets and my DD has a curtain rail! I took the plunge and cut the eyelets out, stitched on a curtain tape and used the eyelet strips as tiebacks! They look super funky!

Ok, I know that you've probably already got this site in your favourites but thought I'd share it with you in case some of you haven't - sort of my input to you for inspiring me so much if that makes sense!

I spend time looking longingly at the creations on there (look at home and garden), and stunned by the prices they charge. I know that all of you can run up something just as lovely if not lovelier for much less than these prices!

I work full-time so don't really have time to post but am always lurking around so keep up the pics and linkys - I love them!

I made this bag over the weekend. The middle bit and the handle is made from a pair of tiebacks i bought from Dunelm for 25p in the reduced box. Think it has come out ok.

    Hi all.
My daughter's bought some material for me to make her a dress. I can't find a pattern that she wants, so I'm using a bridesmaid dress pattern that I made for myself years ago for the fitted bodice and making the skirt part up. I'm practicing first with a duvet cover which she likes anyway so that'll be two dresses she's getting.

Now here's a question specifically for Rosalie-Lavender but if anyone else can help I would be grateful because I want to get on with it today. To save using the zip she's bought for the proper dress I had an idea I could probably do lacing up the back like Rosalie-Lavender's tartan dress - is the lacing enough for the opening or is a side zip needed as well?

The dress I made my daughter only has the lacing but she does have to put it on over her head and wiggle into it.

The dress that inspired hers had no gathers at all round the waist but was very short-like just barely cover your knickers short! Hers needed to be longer so really needed some gathers but she didn't want it too full. I ended up with two lengths of material of different lengths to use as the skirt which meant no seam lined up with the bodice side seams or centre back. We trialled it and she can get it on without but the lacing has to be undone quite a bit first.

I would say put a side zip in or continue the lacing down the skirt a bit. If you continue down the skirt you will need to consider whether her undies are going to show and if it needs some kind of facing. Alternatively you could always make some extra loops and put loops and buttons at the side to make an opening if you want to save the zip.

My daughter is also a very slim size 8 with no lumps and bumps lucky thing so it is easier for her to wiggle into it. The other thing to consider is how long is the bodice. The bodice on the dress I made is quite long and sits more on the top of my daughters hips than her waist which makes the opening longer.

Hi Everyone :D and welcome Lala :D

After my dress disaster this weekend I did manage to make the lazy days skirt for my GD :D
    http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac266/hart4334/mse/Courtneysskirt.jpg

I got 2 pink pillowcases from the CS so I opened it up and used the material for her skirt.
The green side pattern looks like a crown so I though she will like it :D

Also started on my patchwork cushion covers to match my quilt :D

Dizzy, I love your bags :T

Morning, hope you don't mind me posting on this thread. I need a pattern cut for a hood of a buggy. Where could I get this done? Have tried a few fabric shops to no avail.

I tried searching on the net & although I found a few tutorials for covering the seat, I couldnt find any for the hood. The buggy I was going to recover, had binding around the edges & I was just going to stitch onto that.

there are a couple of places on ebay that make hood & buggy covers but are ££££ (which I guess is why you want to do it yourself!)

i doubt you will find a pattern for a buggy hood

can you not pick apart the current hood, and use that as a template? i take it its the type that fits on a frame? or just open out the hood, and then try cutting a piece of newspaper to the shape, in situ, adding bits here and there to allow for seams and channels?
