    Hi all!

I got my sewing machine in January this yr, not made much really, a basic Roman Blind, A peg bag (a must!) a few table cloths, all just practiscing really.

Ive started a course recentlylearning to sew, and have done a purse with zip and am now on with a skirt. (My course is on tonight, i get sew (!!!) excited on a thursday!

Anyways, im a bit scared of patterns but have just bitten the bullet and ordered 2 maxi dress patterns from simplicity which im just gunna have a go at. Might just get some really cheap fabric to play with first and make a mock up

Hi there, thanks for your reply - :) Do you think then that it would be suitable for a beginner and for me not to get bored with after a while?

Have you used it to help you with anything yet or made any of the projects?

    x

It is aimed at beginners and in it there are lots of references to dressmaking such as pleats, darts, seams, cutting out accurately, pattern marking, zips, buttonholes, etc. The projects are like jewel roll, bolster pillow, roman blind, mans tie, needle case, apron, cushion, etc.

It is more of a reference book, I'd get something else if you are interested in projects, etc. Get it out from the library if you are unsure.
Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.

I agree with molly, I bought that book too from the book club and its very comprehensive, more reference than projects but very useful and suitable for beginners.

Evening everyone....need a bit of help if that is OK?

I've just bought a dress for my cousins wedding and it's a little to short, but I LOVE the style and I've already slightly modded it

    this one

It was a bubble hem dress but I've taken the elestic out of the bottom so it hangs a little better

The problem is it now seems a little short so I was thinking of putting a little lace around the hem to give the illusion that it is a little longer.......do you think that would work?!

    Thanks in advance everyone :)

How short is is Nunny? You can try pinning or tacking a bit of lace to see what it looks like before you tale the plunge. I think a thin bit of lace would look OK, maybe pop a bit round the sleeves too to tie it all in but a wide strip - um , I can't picture that looking nice.

What about wearing opaque tights with the dress for a bit more decency, but as a general rule at a wedding if there is any doubt in your mind that it is too short then it probably is.

It's about an inch above my knees but as I'm a "bigger" girl I'm not sure about it. I'm wearing purple tights with it and I'm embellishing the bib bit at the top

    Thanks for the honesty thought!

nunnygirl what about a strip of gathered fabric - fold a strip in half, gather the raw edge side and sew to back of hem. Would look like a double layer.

I have just cut out my first ever pattern pieces. The pattern is an Oliver & S "Sailboat" shirt cost a small fortune but I am using a stripy sheet that I got at a car boot for 50p. Only thing is that I cut the stripes vertically (as My Husband & Mum both thought it would look better) and now I am looking at the pieces cut out It is making me think concentration camp! I may have to start all over again & cut the fabric so that the stripes are horizontal!
