Hi, can I join too please?
I always wanted to be able to sew and for my 30th Birthday my sister bought me sewing machine and my brother paid for couple day courses.
I then bought subscription to Burda magazine and made my first real project. This is the dress I made http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/lace-waist-dress-052013 but mine is in blue with black lace.
I will post a picture once I find exactly how to. I have tried several times, but never managed.
I seriously panicked several times when doing this and there is few mistakes (like the shoulder seam), but I am really proud that I did it. Looking back, it was too much of an ambitious project for a beginner... but Burda said it's "easy with few technical steps"!!
My next project is going to be http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/summer-tank-052013
I bought lovely silk satinge for £4 online for it, but my MIL is scaring me off as that being one of the most difficult materials to work with... well, I have to try one day, don't I?0 -

can you tell me if this link works please.
my first 2 attempts at 'proper' sewing (real dresses as opposed to fancy dress costume that only gets worn for an hour)
the little cream/brown dress still needs straps and detailing adding, but the other sundress is finished
really proud of myself.
Oh, I really like it! That is amazing! Including the fancy costumes, those are really cool!0 -

Well, it does have few faults but all hideable.. Thank you all!
Anyone using craftsy.com site? I downloaded class on zippers for free, it is online course website for other crafts as well (cake decorating, cooking, etc)... most classes are paid for, but you download it and watch it whenever you want and they really walk you through a project.. They have offers all the time.
I haven't bought a class yet, only had 2 free ones but I thought they were good. I needed the zipper class for the dress as it has invisible zip.. http://www.craftsy.com/class/mastering-zipper-techniques/178
I would recommended for beginners..
I also downloaded a free class on pizza making, haven't tried it yet but might do this weekend.0 -

Hi Any, you've at least chosen a simple pattern to use a difficult fabric with!:rotfl: Silk satin is very slippery to sew, so make sure to baste (tack) it well before using your sewing machine on it. I have vague memories of being advised to stitch through tissue paper to help stabilise the fabric, and possibly help with the slippage factor... But it's so long since I did even simple sewing I can't remember detail.
I expect there'll be someone on here who can give better advice. In the meantime it might be worth searching on YouTube for tutorials on sewing silk satin. Good luck with it, looks a lovely cool top for these hot summer days!

In Burda they advise to iron on stabilising tape... I ordered one off Ebay, so we'll see!!0
