here is the dress i made last week for my daughter its not perfect but its a good first effort. i am not a dress maker i attempted to make a very simple dress two years ago it literally was just two pieces of fabric with a chanel that you threaded fabric through to form straps.

This one was a little more challenging shall we say!

    Ok so I need help...
I decided (after some 20+ years of not doing any sewing apart from repairs, hems. Cushion covers) to make a dress. I haven't followed a pattern since school.
I have cut the pattern out (1 size bigger than I need to allow for error),didn't remember about notches for darts etc and have done < instead of > if you see what I mean.
Then I decided to buy lining material but have no idea what to do or how to do it. I made a small start-sewing by hand (a bit frightened of my machine that is over 20 years old). I guess I'm worried I'm going to make a hash of it. Please help/advise?
    Thank you
Tatty, dont be scared, just try to follow the pattern as it goes and dont try to cut corners. With the darts, what you can do is put the pattern back over the piece of fabric you have cut out, push a pin through all the points of the dart from the back of the fabric towards the paper then take the pattern back off again and you will see where the darts are.

As for the lining, the dress I just made, the lining was practically the same pattern as the dress so in effect I just made up another dress the same without the embellishments (bows etc) in the lining fabric then placed it inside and sewed it in around the edges so to speak xx

    Hi sewers...
You know that fabric that dissolves in water leaving just your stitches behind? How do you guys all use it?
Just wondering...totally didn't buy some today and not have the courage to ask about all of the uses for it.
    Ahem.

Hmo - the dress is lovely :)

I've not been on here for a while as been busy getting ready for a move. Have a quick question for you all - I need to change a pair of tab top curtains into pencil pleat ones as I hate the way they take up so much room on the curtain pole. Is this going to be possible?
I had thought I could cut off the tabs and sew header tape onto the back and job done - but then they'd be too short :(
So now my idea is to sew the header tape onto another fabric and then join it to the top of the curtain where I've cut the tabs off. Is there going to be too much bulk at the top to stop them pleating properly?

It's used with embroidery machines which stitch out a design then you wash the stabiliser backing away and you are left with a lace like design

I've wanted to make something like this lovely scarf for ages, but none of the shops near me stocks the fabric.

OMG. Thanks so so much for this link. I LOVE this. :j
And as hmo says, you can get the fabric online...possibly cheaper than in the shops too, I dunno. I paid 1.75 for 3m of it. Not sure how wide it is though.

More fabric from Leicester Market. The navy with white stars and the white cotton are "Paul Smith" fabrics. The floral is sheer and the blue patterned is sort of silky.... 2 metres of each, total price £14 :j
