I use patterns. I find that Simplicity patterns are straightforward to follow. They do cost about £8. But there are plenty of offers online. I subscribe to Prima magazine an get a free pattern every month.
25 yrs ago I did GCSE textiles and learnt how to follow and adapt patterns, so I'm revisiting those skills.
The blouse above was adapted from the pattern in the current issue of Prima. I removed the sleeves and instead of the neck and armhole facing, I used homemade bias binding to coordinate with the skirt pockets.
I really enjoy dressmaking, although my fabric stash has got a bit out of hand recently...... It's supposed to be a MSE hobby...:D;)
you did great i made a dress recently for my little girl and that was a simplicity pattern and although it should have been easy i struggled bait but i have never done clothes making but i got there in the end i posted it a few days above its up above.
but i think i will try it again, hoping it will be easier next time0 -
Lovely projects again. Well done to all. Thanks for the great links too.

thanks for suggesting cushions
I have found some material I got for cushions ages ago - so will make some non zip cushions for starters
Does anyone have a pattern for a peg bag, the sort that has a coat hanger in the top?
Thanks,
Try googling the website "tipnuts", they have many free and easy patterns for beginners, I have saved virtually every set of patterns on their site as a library of inspiration for my sewing projects. Good Luck!Bring on a homemade 2013!:wave:0 -

Hi folks
Can I join?
I had no idea the sort of things you can make at home! But wanted to kit out DS's room in dino things but just couldn't find what I wanted. So bought some dino fabric and got to work. First time ever on a sewing machine. I practised on some old envelopes!
I made this
Could have done much better though. It's unfinished in the pic but have now sewn up the top (rather wobbly) and added the ties. Now in the middle of making matching bunting. Going to have another shot. I want to make a better quilt. Thinking of doing it reversible with dino print on the back and on the front my own applique dinosaurs and his name in applique too. And a piped border.
I've borrowed my MIL's Toshiba sewing machine - it's great. I did have a beginners one at first but it was so hard to get the fabric to feed through straight and this one is much easier.
Have only just discovered you get patterns for this sort of stuff. I have an ancient book on sewing and that's it.
Have just ordered the fabric for my DDs. I find the fabric quite expensive though. £20 in total for DD's quilt but I suppose that's good for a handmade keepsake. Just discouraging when I can buy lovely quilt sets for less than that.0 -
well done they look great you will get better the more you do and your confidence grows.
fabric can be expensive but for something like a quilt you want it to last so worth paying extra plus you will probably get a better finish if you start with good quality fabric.0 -
Yes well done they look really nice xx0

What lovely makes there are. I need to go back a few pages to see what I've missed. Nice to see there are even more people taking up sewing :T
Belowtheline; I have used duvet covers/sheets/curtains (some charity shops sell them cheap) and other material for quilts in the past. Although if you want a theme it's harder to get the right pattern. Yours is looking great and I bet it looks lovely in his bedroom.
Here is my 'Sunshine Sampler' using up my tiny bits of stash that I couldn't throw away
There are some close up photos on my homepage0 -
