Hello, does anyone know/have any patterns for cushions 16 x 16 inches without a zip, preferably envelope style at the back.
i do mine in three
cut 1 piece 17x17
cut 2 pieces 17x14
turn half inch hem on one long side of the two small pieces
lay the 17x17 right side up
place the two small pieces right side down on top with the hem sections overlapping in the middle so all raw edges should be on the outside if that makes sense
sew all round i would use about half inch seem allowance you could overlock all round too to stop fraying, you could zigzag all round edge to stop fraying or you could cut everything out with pinking shears which would stop fraying or you can just leave it all together.
clip corners and turn inside out you should be left with about 4.5-5inch overlap
if you want your cushion plumper cut the 17 inch wide smaller
hope that makes sense0 -
Mooloo I was browsing ebay & spotted these lagenlook tunics I think it's a style that would lend itself well to your upcycling, quite fancy trying to make something similar myself do you need an overlocker for the stitching though or could you do something similar with a standard machine http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/christophesca/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686Booo!!!0

Hello
I'd like to start making my own soft furnishings: cushions, blinds, curtains, bed linen etc and although I'm very 'crafty' in other respects, I've not done machine sewing since school on a treadle model!
There are occasionaly classes / summer schools on getting to know your sewing machine and also soft furnishing courses and I guess that's the way I'll go to learn the basics.
However there isn't a course that advises on sewing machine purchase! Can any of you people give your views / opinions, pros and cons. I'll need something that can handle heavy and thick fabrics as well as finer stuff, and also do zips.
Although I don't want to go down the all singing and dancing road, I don't want to get something so basic that there isn't room for doing stuff that's a little fancier if I should get bitten by the bug.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. And if you can recommend websites / blogs that would be great too!
Thank you.__________________________________

My Pfaff was free from a relative who had it lying around though - might be worth seeing if your relatives have one you could borrow for a bit until you know you enjoy it and want to invest in your own machine. As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again0 -

Hi. There are video demos of a few machines here http://www.sew.co.uk/video which may help you to decide what you think you may or may not need in your new machine. The best thing would be to pop along to a sewing machine shop, have a chat with the dealer and a play before you buy. Don't discount a used machine from a dealer as you can pick up some great bargains.0 -
I have a brother MS6 NT and love it I would definitely suggest you get one with a needle threaded that's the best feature on mine apart from not having to use a foot pedal most machines these days can cope with many varieties of fabric also look for one that you can drop the feed dogs you may want to do free motion sewing on quilts or home decor in the future that's what I sew most too got loads if stuff on my blog and Pinterest0
