What Im not sure about is the handles. Do these have to be stiched to the outside or is there way to stitch in between the lining and outer fabric? I was going to leave a space when stitching outer fabric and lining together but as they will need to be quite sturdy Im not convinced that a standard top stitch will be sufficient to hold them? Have a look at this http://www.ehow.com/video_4438355_inserting-handles-making-tote-bag.html
I really enjoy making these bags but this part shows how to position the handles between the main and lining fabric.0 -

I do patchwork without one, but I haven't actually got around to quilting by machine yet. I bought a new machine in November and it came with a walking foot: I was in John Lewis yesterday and the walking foot that would fit my Janome was.... £37!!! So they're not cheap. If you can get away without using one it would be an unnecessary expense. Not sure if you could get one if your machine is that old, to be honest.
Thanks loopychriss, I have seen universal feet on the net but again these are around the £30 mark. I decided to go ahead with it they didn’t all match up but it was good enough and looked like thefinished product in the book anyway.stardrops42 wrote: »He's here:j:j:j Little Oliver arrived tonight weighing 8 pound 7oz he has lots of dark brown hair and is just perfect:D
Thanks for all the kind words everyone.
Congrats stardrops did she like the babyblanket you made for him?I've been reading this thread lots recently and today bought my first sewing machine! (the one that's on offer in Lidl - not sure how good it is but figured it would do for a complete beginner like me!). Really excited to get started and luckily a friend of mine has agreed to help me out on Sunday, teaching me how to do the basics, which is very exciting!
Ooo please let me know how you get on with it as my sewing machine only does the normal straight stitch so I was thinking about getting this one.hmm some advice required please -
1. have now got two tilda books - they are gorgeous and one on order.... but query is do you all use the linens she specifies or are there any other fabrics you could use - ? nervos about starting one of the projects (as would like to use up some of my fabric hoard)
QUOTE]
Hi ocemeer I bought the tilda skin fabric online at coast and country crafts which also stock other tilda fabrics I ordered a fat quarter of a cheaper fabric as the site described it as a good colour match with the tilda one just a finer weave (and a lot cheaper)- the colour was good but imo the tilda one was better as it was thicker defo order a fat quarter of each to see what you prefer . I cant find all the fabrics on line just a few. I would say you could get away with using any fabrics you have for the clothes though, I prefer thicker fabrics as they keep their shape better.0 -

YES PLEASE:D I have been playing around with how to do wings wedging two peices of wing shaped fabric between either sides of the main square of fabric sewing it in and then folding it around the front then folding it back on itself and stitching but it looked messy!0 -

Hello ladies
I got my sewing machine yesterday and decided to make the bag organiser today!
I didnt have a pattern but I did have an idea of what I wanted and measured my smallest bag (and my purse) so that it would be the right size! For my first real sewing project I am quite pleased with myself!
here it is
Its quite exciting to find a bag I have not used for a while it usually contains a myriad of bits and bobs, usually hairbands, half packs of chewing gum, panty liners and sometimes a fiver!!
I will have to make one of these - thanks Nuttybabe. You can stand there and agonize........
