The Sewing Room

Don't seem to be getting on with anything much at the moment. I have made the odd bag out of jeans, and refined it a few times. Currently waiting for DGD to go back to school so I can spread my work back out across the room and finish the multi patchwork cover for the sofa. Funnily enough the new edition of Homemaker has similar sofa's in.
So what I am doing is sort of bang on trend then.
I have cut another bag out of the leg of the jeans, and the lining etc, made some patch pockets to go on the outside of the fabric, and will add a key ring. Just want to find a zip in my stash to be able to close the bag.
I have an order for more bunting. 3 girls, so I am going to have to venture back into the loft for some pink fabrics, and some of my Cath Kidston stuff. Love working with that. So its important I get my act together.
I have been trying to study on, about setting up a proper sewing business as when I did it 25 years ago, I just happened to have a circle of friends who wanted work, and then it grew from them. This time around if I want to get off of the benefits and get the right foot forward I have to have a business plan, and be viable/??/eek.
I really am not getting much luck, though as all the books I have devoured are from America, nobody English (welsh or Scottish) so far has written on the subject. Although the Welsh Government site gives a much better lead as too what is required there, and the charges for a dressmaker are expected to be £30 an hour!!!
Will have to work my way up the ladder and find some people with deep pockets if I was to be earning that amount of money. You have to laugh.
I think If I lived in London, or a big town, with a lot of wealth around, then maybe it would not be so laughable.
Oh well, that's my little rant for the day over.
I must get dressed I am still sitting in my dressing gown with the curtains shut. DGD is watching Tom and Jerry on the tv.When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Hi Mooloo the time is right for teaching people to sew, the Great British Sewing Bee is giving people a push. Why not let mother's at the school know you are looking to teach sewing. I am sure that you will get some takers.0

Hello,
I have bought a Brother XL2610 sewing machine, however I am surprised that it doesn't come with a foot controller. Any ideas if this is correct or where I can buy one from? Sorry new to the hobby of sewing.0 -

Thanks should I ring Brother or Hobbycraft where I got it from. Thought foot control and lead should come with sewing machine as standard unless I am being thick!0 -
I would of thought its standard to come with a foot pedal. Im quite shocked. Ring hobbycraft firstI'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!JUST LOVES THE O/S BOARD0

Some new machines don't have footpedals, just push button starts, but definitely should have a power lead!
I prefer to use a foot pedal, as then my hands are free for guiding the fabrics better. But that's just my opinion.
On the sewing lessons, I think that I will need to see if the school would be interested in having afterschool classes maybe? or if indeed the big school does. Off to see if I can find anything outWhen I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Does it have the hole bit (lol sorry can't think of the word I want, someone let me know what it is) for a foot pedal to be connected to the machine?0

if you bought it new from hobby craft i would go back to them, as far as i am aware all machines come with a mains lead and foot control, even my electronic machine that has the start/stop button function still has a foot pedal although ive never used it its still in its wrapper much prefer just being able to press start and stop.
good luck0
