well after 2 hours ive managed to sew a very wobbly line:j but ive managed to snap the needle :( hows that happened.

where is the cheapest place for needles? and also cotton as i only have a small reel?

we dont really have any shops locally that stock sewing bits and bobs

Needles do sometimes just break probably due to age. But otherwise it may be because the machine was incorrectly threaded, the needle was not inserted into the machine fully, the needle hit a pin, the fabric was too thick, the fabric was being pushed through the machine rather than just guided through or the thread snagged. i have found that some chap thread snags or breaks (which is very annoying0 so i tend to stick to a name thread.

And you will quickly be sewing staighter lines as it is only a bit of practice!
  • This company sell needles and cotton and other haberdashery bits. You can order online, by post or by phone. They aren't always the cheapest but that is offset by the fact they don't charge delivery for orders over £10. It is better to use a cheque or debit card though because they do have a small charge for credit cards.

I was looking up patterns for a needlebook only this morning as mine has become stained - i would say to anyone who wants to make one to use flexible thin plastic inside the covers so it can be washed, as mine has cardboard, which is why I have to replace it

I have cut up plastic milk cartons too use, as I like to recycle as well. I also use strips of milk cartons to make fashion bracelets for the kids.
I cover them in fabrics and sew on old fashioned poppers.!

I have been making, but not exactly true to my one make a day, but I have 9 PE bags made now, as well as the kindle case and the two iphone covers so I am just within my make a day adverage does that count?
I was going to sew today, but I was distracted and now I am just plain knackd. So tomorrow I will get back to the machine and finish off the last 3 bags, then I want to make a bunting for the next birthday party DGD is off too. Would you believe she has just been invited to the third one this year!!
She is a popular little girl is all I can say!. Luckily it doesnt cost me as I use up things from my stash!. If I was to be buying presnets I would be well out of pocket.

If what you've bought is the pic there, What about getting some ribbon that matches your dress & curl it round over the pink part in the base so you may just see an edge of the pink & leave the feathers as they are quite small & will just be accents of a different colour
You can anchors the tubing with small stitches or a glue gun

What a good idea Trixabelle, Id never have thought of that, but that is a good possibility isnt it. The cerise bit you can see (sorry its so small) is actually a flower but I can get some red ribbon or net perhaps and add it to the fascinator. Or even cut red ribbon out and stick it on top of the flower petals? Thanks so much. Could you tell me what "tubing" is please? Im useless at any craft type stuff.

ignore that i was multitasking & obviously muddling up 2 conversations in my head :o for tubing read ribbon

if its a flower i'd still say curl/loop some ribbon inside and/or outside the petals to cover most of the pink.
if you cut the ribbon out & stuck it over i think you would end up with too many raw edges that may fray and spoil, also you can remove small stitches and return it to the original colours if ever required.

Good quality thread does help with your sewing projects but whilst you are just learning if you have a morrisons they usually have a korbond stand somewhere in the store with scissors, threads etc and their thread is ok if you don't have a haberdashery shop nearby

hi i was wondering if anyone knew where i could get a sewing machine from. It's only for a hobby and i really don't have much spare money at the moment but any ideas/advise woulld be greatly appricated. thanks
Charlie: I work in a sewing machine shop and would recommend going into one to play with various machines to see what you like and can afford. Many shops sell refurbished machines (we take some in part-exchange from people buying bigger/more expensive machines), so you could get a good bargain to take away. You should also be able to keep going back for help and advice from the staff, or perhaps the shop offers classes...thats what we do. :)

In fact ladies, I have done just that, bought one of our shop's refurbished machines (not that it needed much cleaning/sorting, it was immaculate!!)....and it's a Bernina!!! I consider them to be the Rolls Royce of the sewing world..and never thought that I would be able to afford one yet. My boss gave me such a great deal and is willing to let me sell my own one in the shop, which will offset considerably the new machine's cost....oooh I am so excited!!:j:j:j

It isn't one of the fancy new ones...some of them cost more than my car!!! It is the Bernina 230 Patchwork Edition, so has come with the walking foot, 1/4" foot and free motion foot, so I am all set to go. I had a play last night..it is sooo quiet and such lovely stitching. Going to do some proper sewing tomorrow. Too tired tonight as was invigilating all day and popped into the gym on my way home, so too shattered to make any sensible design decisions on one of my projects which needs to be finished this weekend.

Managed to get the socks finished for my DH's nephew...he's only a size 6 (he's 31) so didn't take very long to finish them off. Made a peg bag for my lil'sis which she loves...didn't take piccies of either...doh!! :o I will try to remember next time. I really need to set up an album for you to access with all my fair and Xmas makes...will try and do that soon...promise!!

In the mean-time, I need to check on how DS2's packing is going. he is heading back to Uni tomorrow. Our food bill will drop dramatically again...thank goodness!!! :)

Have a great Friday and hope some of you can get some stitching done xx

    Ooops, sorry for the ramble!!
