The Sewing Room

Lovely makes, everyone. Too many to mention.
I manged to make a christmas decoration which was more wrapping ribbon then any sewing, but it was crafting. I have so many ideas now, that all I need is the energy and the time. Should have the time, but have to sleep in the day due to my meds, so frustrating.
Tomorrow I have all day to myself. As far as I know. So hoping to get to the sewing machine and finish some of the things that have been loitering for so long. Also I have those lovely sari's and I want to create new curtains in my front room with them. I already have green voiles with gold braiding and those mirror thingybobs in them which I have dragged from pillar too post, and currently have some orange tabtop curtains, so the front room is already full of colour, just fancy a bit of a change. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Could anyone recommend any good tutorials on how to make one?
I've used these instructions many times and always get good results:

hi I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have alot of cusions that I would like to get covered as have changed decor. I am not very good at sewing btw!! But looking today it is so expensive to find the colour (black) that I want for them. Money is alittle tight at mo. (as it is for all/ or most!)
I was wondering if it is difficult to make them for someone with very little sewing knowledge (but willing to learn)! Or is it cheaper to just pay the £20 to £30 that it would cost.
Thanks0 -

I am going to give myself a break for a few days to get back to normal as my fingers are a bit sore and my back aches like mad. I would still like to make one of those aprons or something similar, maybe just a straight one with out the layers. I also want to make a draught excluder to go in the living room. I will have to have a search for some patterns unless any of you have any already bookmarked.
You did a great job well done0 -

Hello,
My mum has given me her sewing machine, It is this model
I need some help in understanding some of the functions, I can't find the manual, mum is unable to help me. I have got as far as setting it up, sewing a little and trying some zig-zag stitches, but I would like to do some appliqu!, but can't get the stitches to be close enough together.
Any help would be greatly received0 -
Don't know that machine, but have you tried bringing the stitch length to zero, and the zigzag to a wider stitch? If that doesnt work does it have a button hole stitch on it? As I cannot get a good small close stitch on my machine (dispite supposed to be able to do), so i use the buttonhole stitch when I am appliqueing.
Good luck with it. The other alternative is to have a "ragged edge" where you cut out the applique with pinking shears and just sew on in straightstitch? When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

Best Person to ask is Rufusdog,
But I have often recovered sofa's etc, with slip covers and cushion covers. I usually use the covers that are already there as templates, so undo the zips and turn them inside out, and cut around them. Then sew then back up. Although if inserting a zip it is easier to insert the zip first, and then leave it slightly open and make up the rest of the cushion, and pull it through. ITS very important to leave the zip part way open when you stitch up the rest of it, or you wont be able to turn it!.
Fabric varies alot. Best to look on Ebay or in Clearance lines.
Best of luck. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Polyskettle - I just love your curtains, the two fabrics look lovely together dont they xx
XYZ1000 - When I made the scatter cushions for my room I had run out of zips so I just left a gap one side and sewed it up after. Is it scatter cushions you are talking about? They are really easy to make, just a square of fabric with the sides sewn up. What Mooloo says is the best idea, just turn the covers inside out and cut around them. You can buy black fabric, have a look on Ebay or if you have a Dunelm MIll near you have a look in there.0 -
Thanks all - OH didn't notice that I'd finished the curtains and hung them, even when I was stood right in front of them talking to him and he was looking at me. Sometimes I wonder why I bother...
Got my eye on some tweed fabric that would make a nice boxy jacket. I know what I want to do in my minds eye, so I shall look for a similar pattern to adapt. I'm still not confident enough to make up my own pattern, but I'll get there. I'm teaching the lady next door to knit too, although truth be told I'm glad of someone to pass the books and magazines on to! I still have plenty though
XYZ - you could always make envelope opening cushions until you are confident enough to do the zips, although if you take it slowly and carefully, anything is possible (<<< my motto!!)"A cat can have kittens in the oven, but that don't make them biscuits." - Mary Cooper
