On the magazine note, has anyone experience of "Sew Hip"? There's a 3 for £5 offer and I was wondering if it was worth it?"A cat can have kittens in the oven, but that don't make them biscuits." - Mary Cooper

Where is the offer??
I have been buying Sew Hip near-enough since the beginning give or take a few mags that had no projects that appealed to me. (It is 2 yrs old) However, they have been taken over by a new team and I don't find it nearly as good any more. There are lots of projects that are very similar to ones that they have done before or that you can find plenty of in blogland. And the projects have become more amatureish and aimed at young girls imo.
But three issues for a fiver is a great offer to get a taster.
I also wasnt that keen on Mollie Makes. Very pretty but not much substance for the price. I came across Australian craft magazines at the Ally Pally show and they are so worth the money (Around £5-£6 so not that much more than UK mags) They are packed full of projects and inspiration.0 -

I know most of you are very experienced and wouldn't need something like this but it might hep someone. Have not actually bought from KGB before so can't comment on they're deals, but am tempted by this one.
I am tempted too it covers
• Make piped seams
• Construct darts
• Make gathers
• Insert concealed zip
• Insert faced zip
• Make buttonholes and cover buttons
• Finish hems and edges
I have done most of that but never tried darts and my zips could do with some help.0 -
I guess we are all very different in our crafting styles
I still would recommend MM to anyone wanting something a bit different, it is very much an 'Etsy generation' magazine. Particularly if you like crafting on a smaller scale as opposed to making large items (such as clothing, I can only make clothes in doll scale!)
Randomly, I do wish someone in the UK would regularly stock the Stampington range of magazines.0 -
Hi
I am finally going to finish my dining room curtains this week and could do with a bit of advice. They came from my old house and need to be shortened. Instead of sorting out the hem I opted to take the header tape off and shorten from the top. I have bought new tape and thats as far as I have got:o but seeing as It's getting cold now I think I better put the interesting sewing down and tackle them.:D
Now would I be better off using a zipper foot to attach the tape or just the normal foot? I have never done this before so would appreciate any advice.
Many thanks

prepareathome. fabricland.co.uk always has a nice range of inexpensive fabrics including a good reduced section of polycottons/cottons for £1.25m. Mine is also a basic machine & I haven't used a sewing machine for years so I'm loathe to spend money on cath kidston prices until I feeling more confident. Somehow if you make a big boo boo starting out it's less upsetiing if it only costs you £2 rather than £20.
I've realised that a few nice white thickish cotton napkins for Xmas entertaining would be a good 1st sewing project to get a feel for my new machiine. I need some new ones & was shocked to find out how dear they are in the shops nowadays. ( my old napkins are about 30 years old).0 -

Hi does anyone have any links to free patterns for 1950s style retro fitted aprons with a bib and a nice sash.
These are often over £20 to buy yet can be made for as little as £2 if you choose the right fabric ; )
I've just got a sewing machine and would like to make some as Xmas presents but am having trouble sourcing a nice pattern
oooooh - just seen this in my blog reader
If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, there are 4 other patterns/tutorials too.0 -
