  • Thank you Mooloo valuable information for a novice like me.
Would love to go on WI course for quilting but at that price I would not be able to afford it!!

Thanks for detail advice and made my mind up not to subscribe to the magazine and get the book you suggested and a rotary cutter as been using a sissors infact have now added 4 books on wish list with amazon. you are right as I would have no idea how much it would take to finish quilt and cost a lot more than making and buying the material myself.
Will look at the blog you mentioned I am more a traditional gal but I am sure a mixture of both is good.

  • I bought the knitting magazine a few years ago as I liked the blanket on the advert. After about 4 issues, I realised exactly how much it was going to cost me in the long term. I'd second blogs and books, although I do use the internet more than I use my books (and I have loads of them). :)

Made an advent calender the day before yesterday, must gets pics of it!

  • Avstar: that cape is gorgeous!! please can I ask where you found the pattern?

& to whoever was discussing stocking tops, I did some the other day & added marabou & just caught it with a small hand stich at 4 spots round the top

i'm so glad i've found this thread, i've been reading MSE for ages but only just got round to registering. i've got tonnes of patterns I want to sew and a rather too large fabric stash (at least I seem to be buying them for specific patterns these days rather than just because I like them :o )
Maybe I can get the inspiration to pull my finger out & complete some more projects now

Sarah - zips are not as bad as you think. I have started to use continuous zipping on my cushions. It takes a bit of practice getting the zipper pulls on the end but once you master it then its so simple.
I am using them too, shame they only come in white/black/navy & ecru! Works well with lots of colours though, so much cheaper than individual zips...and you get the length you want/need!!
Lovely stockings. So you wouldn't recommend fur then? I'm wondering what else to use. We have made a very slow start on our stockings.
I would use felt or white fleece if the fur is a problem.
I wonder if some one can help me, I am a beginner at this sewing but I am trying the patchwork stockings which I am doing okay at.I found a publication called the art of quilting does anyomne know if it is worth collecting or maybe a beginners book on quilting.
With the above magazine it is weekly and they supply material to make a square for quilt so in the end you make a quit but 3.99 a week and not sure if worth it IYKWIM. Thanks
I subscribed to Popular Patchwork at the Festival of Quilts @ NEC this summer, and got a really good deal...a reduced annual cost, three extra mags and a box of 18 metallic threads! Not sure if I will renew it next year though, it is a good magazine, but I keep finding other mags I want to read too!!! :rotfl: Loving "Stitch" and "Craftseller" atm.

Slowly recovering from my hernia op on Tuesday, brain has almost come out of the anaesthetic fug, but the body is still rather sore..had to get more painkillers from the doc today :(. Still not sleeping throught the night yet. At least my TENS machine is helping with my sore back :o.

Been distracted this morning though, as I have been ordering a new sewing machine!!! :j:j

I wasn't going to get a new one for a few months yet, as I wanted to work out what I really needed in a machine (which I have), and save up the money (which I haven't :o). Then I found one at Mr T that I can use my vouchers in the exchange scheme, so getting twice as much as the voucher face values. DH said to go for it and that I could have it for my birthday next week!!

So I have got this Singer 7470 computerised sewing machine.. £35 instead of £355 :eek::eek:, including £5 delivery!!! :j:j Really pleased!

OK, so I don't get the extra long supplier's warranty, but I will still get the manufacturer's one..and Singer is a good make. It is so much fancier than my "utilitarian" Lewenstein that I have had for 25 years...can't wait to have a play!! Hope I can manage a few sessions with this sore stomach of mine! Only knitting and hand sewing atm....but this will be some incentive to get better!! :):)

Need to go and have a lie down, feeling quite giddy after all this excitement today!! Also needing my next set of painkillers...that will make me even fuzzier for a bit! :o.

Have a lovely day everyone xxx

  • That's the machine I have, Keiss. I've had it for a couple of years now and I get on really well with it and have had no problems at all *touches wood*. I've made all sorts and stitched allsorts of fabric with it. The extra stitches are useful and nice, although the alphabet stitching is a bit rubbish. I wish I'd only paid £35 + Tesco vouchers! The first thing you should make is a cover for it as the one that comes with it is horrible though ;)

Hope your sofa covering is going well Rufus, sounds like you're getting there.

Here's the cape I made, my first proper pattern make, more pics on my blog. I was v nervous cutting it out, and I had to make up the lining as the pattern didn't have one, but it worked out OK :)

Wow Keiss, thats fab to get your machine for £35 plus vouchers, and hope you're feeling better soon after your op.

Thanks hmo and everyone. Trix-a-belle, the pattern is McCalls M5913 which I bought from sewessential.co.uk a couple of months ago when they had a half price sale on. I can't see it on their website any more but you might be able to find it on another site. There's quite a few cape patterns now as they they're popular at the mo.

    Hello everyone!
I don't often post on here but I do subscribe and read often!
I was just wondering what you all sit on to sew at your machines?
I sew quite a lot and am struggling with backache and I want to buy a decent chair to sit in while I sew!!
    Does anyone have any recommendations?
Would love to know what you all use :)
    Thanks in advance!
