  • That's great mysk_girl! I hope you can get an action shot.
  • Lovely makes Keiss and Mysk.
Have had a great afternoon / evening of sewing, made one of these cute gift bags

Was really fun to make, although went wrong somewhere, handle is not right! Have to blag it though as not got enough time to unpick the steps, is more of a hook to hang it up than a handle! Also made yet another 2 phone covers, these were requested by my mum though.

  • I also have a question, I'm looking for some cheap polar fleece in small amounts to make some patchwork cushion covers for DS's room. Any ideas, I only want a very small amount of each colour, so don't want to buy lots of it.

    Thanks in advance.

fabricland do a minimum cut of 10cm and a good selection of fleecy fabrics. They have a (hideous) website but you have to order over the phone and the charge you whatever the royal mail postage comes to. I am lucky to have a local store so can avoid the website :rotfl:

Looks like a fab tutorial. I wish I could make up stuff like that rather than following other people's patterns <sigh>. One day maybe! Will try for action shot of the carrier tomorrow. I tried my son in it, but at a chunky, tall (like daddy!) 19 months, he's too big...
  • Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how much money i should be paying for a metre of fabric as i think my local shop seems quite dear. At £7-£15 a metre for cotton patterned. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    sadly that is quite normal!

A lot of the ladies here buy duvet sets in charity shops, car boots or if brand new if they are on sale anywhere (Tesco & Argos usually) I have bought some 100% cotton sets in TK Max in the past to use in quilting.

Markets are good places to buy fabrics & habbie bits too.

I am lucky that I have a Fabricland near me. Their cottons start at just £3!

Oops, I may have just made rather a large order from jackies fabrics -
    http://www.jackiesfabrics.co.uk/store/

..but such bargains...and the sale is due to finish today, so really I had to!!!! :o :rotfl:

Now I will have lovely fabrics to line my bags/purses, and some lovely FQs to make a wall-hanging for my landing upstairs, just the colours I've been looking for :D

Pootle - thanks for your comments re my company name. I love yours and I do think it sounds pretty professional too. As for Morags, we are few and far between. I have only met one other in England, and that was only a couple of years ago. We were both quite chuffed about it!! I think I have known personally three others and a few more by wom.

Had my quilting beginners class today and made a fabric flower, following Japanese folding techniques, a sort of
material origami. It's not too bad though I used too big a square of material..should have been 4" and I used a 6" square...might have a go at another sometime....as if I don't have enought to do!

Keiss the fabric flower sounds nice, I saw some quilts at the show on Sunday that had those fabric flowers sewn on them, they looked so effective, I would love to be able to do them to put on my bags and cushions. I will have to have a look for a tut online. I know what you mean about the sale at Jackies lol, I am waiting for my parcel to come too xx

I managed to tie my hands behind my back, and not order from jackies, but oh I was so tempted. But as I am not well enoough to sew at the moment, then adding to my stash seemed that it was rather stupid. I can hardly move in the work room for fabric and fabric remenants, so it will be very difficult to justify any more purchases.
I am desperate to sew, but I am already still struggling to get through a normal day, without the help of others I would have been in a mess.
A fw more days at least before I venture into the sewing room.
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.

Sorry to hear you are suffering atm Mooloo, hope you feel better soon...can you not even knit? I usually manage to knit even if I feel unable to do anything else.

Rufus, I have very little quilting-weight fabrics, all I have fits into the sewing caddy that I got from Lidl in the summer...so not very much yet. That will all change once the Jackie order comes through though!! :rotfl: The folded flower I was making yesterday came from this book...she has lots of other books, considering getting this one sometime.

Gearing myself up to ringing a lady later on today about knitting up a long coat and skirt. She asked the local haberdasher, who has asked me if I am interested. It is a 1970s pattern and the wool is unavailable, so substitutes will need to be found.

Talking to friends, (some having made things for a living), I have been advised to charge for making the total outfit, rather than charge per hour...I am a crafts-woman and not a piece-worker apparently!! So got to go and write down various questions and statements I want to ask/say before ringing her. I am thinking about charging her £250..not including materials...is that fair do you think? Some think I should ask for more.....£300 perhaps. It's an easy enough pattern, but will take quite a while to knit. Three different yarns and a stripey pattern in garter stitch.

Right off now to write my list and then get some "paid" work done...despite the gas men digging up next door's path and patio, what a racket!!
