Gosh I must be tired, that sounds so complicated! I will read it again tomorrow and make better sense of it I am sure!.
Do you mean enclose the elastic inside some fabric then thread it through the garment?
Why not Make a seperate wasteband, that you sew around the elastic, then join it to the item? Cant remember was it a skirt?
God I am so tired I am struggling to think properly now! Time for me to switch off and get an early night me thinks.
Happy sewing everyone.
Yes, enclose the elastic in fabric, then thread it through. If you use fairly stiff fabric, it should work.0 -
I will try your suggestion later, Nykied, and let you know how I get on. Thanks again.0

Do you ever get days where you want to throw your sewing machine out of the window?! I thought Id finish off a bag Im making this morning. Sewed the handles on the wrong way round, sewed the bag to the lining the wrong way round and didnt see that the button closure had fallen off before I started sewing it all together. I swear that I have sewing amnesia today. Ive done these things loads n loads of times and for some reason I did everything back to front! Have now unpicked it all and put it back in the cupboard for another day! Hope you all having a lovely weekend. x0

Deary me Pootle what a shame. I bet there was steam coming out of your ears!! Yep, I've had those sort of days very frequently. When things start to go wrong it's always best to leave it and come back later.0

Pootle, I can sympathise greatly with your woes - I've had a rubbish week, not all related to sewing, and leaving it all and coming back next week won out as the top coping strategy! I've just moved from 3 x 7.5 hour days at work to 4 x 6 hours days, and the extra morning clothing/hairbrushing/general yelling at people to HURRY UP has taken its toll.
But the most rubbish thing is no sewing time. I have been writing thankyou notes for our wedding presents, which is, of course, a necessary task, but I would rather be with my beloved Brother... Have managed to purchase a knee brace for running, which has done the trick and have managed to bash out a couple of 4 milers, which has been good.
Onwards with next week, which can only be better - got to keep believeing that. I am getting into blogging though, thanks to avstar for providing the final push to start up, and have loads of draft blogs already. Again, time is my enemy...
Hope the bag goes better next week!0 -
Pootle I've had half my sewing days like that which I put down to being a beginner, so some comfort in knowing it happens to the experts too!
Have made yet another phone cover, really must move onto something else, but wanted to make one for my Auntie to say thanks for lending me her sewing machine.0 -
Yep, its happened to me, no end of time over the years. Even just before I went away, I struggled with the pintucks on DGD's dress. did them the wrong way around! So had to redo. Then I noticed on holiday that they are not even! Oh well nobody else seemed to notice.
Sitting hand sewing my little squares together. Long winded but the best way to fill my time infront of the TV.
Back to the machine work tomorrow when DGD is at Nursery in the morning. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Nykieds worked.
But based on what Mooloo said about threading the elastic through loosely I came up with a solution which worked.
I marked the elastic about 2cms from the end...measured the length I wanted (46cms) and marked the elastic again.
I used the large safety pin method attached to the marked end and threaded it through the casing.
When it emerged I matched the two marks and stitched it and cut the remainder off.
No folding elastic.
Perhaps someone else might find this useful.
Thanks again.0 -
poor pootle!
the teacher on the beginners quilting course that I did. said that if you make the same mistake twice in a row, it is time to pack away the machine.
I do wonder at times if sewing is like cooking. My Nan (and Mum) would never ever bake if they were unwell or feeling run down as the cakes etc would come out badly. Although I like to sew to unwind, I do find somedays it just doesnt work out and I wonder if it is because I am too stressed out from the days events.
I have spent all week attempting some "paper-pieced foundation blocks" But have had to keep unpicking because I kept sewing the next piece of fabric on the wrong way round. I am attempting to make this

with a pattern I found. It is my first attempt at foundation piecing. I thought it would be a good way to use up scraps. But is is quite fiddley and has taken a lot longer to do than I expected. Also my machine has got a bit fed up with the blunt needle (you sew the fabric onto paper & then tear the paper away) and keeps missing stitches.
I have finished one doll, will try & add a photo later.0
