Question - do you let door to door salesmen in?

We just had someone come to the door from 'Talktalk' apparently. I wasnt paying much attention until my partner invited the person in as he had told my partner that we could qualify for free broadband and he needed to check our line.
Now, firstly my partner is usually the one that is super vigilant about security and secondly we are on a contract with BT for another 12 months so I didnt see the point of someone 'checking our line'.
We are very unhappy with BT at the moment so my partner believed the salesman who told him that talktalk could talk BT into relinquishing the contract.
I said this was nonsense (this is all in front of the salesman) and said NO THANK YOU, CAN YOU LEAVE, leaving my partner apologising profusely to the salesman.
A row has therefore broken out between us with me wondering what on earth has gone to his head that he invites what I call a charletan into the home to 'check our line'.
Am I being overly suspicious, my partner reckons that 'a big company like talktalk isnt going to rip people off or promise stuff they cant deliver'
My feeling is that all companies are going to rip you off given half a chance and that no way can another internet provider promise to get your out of a contract you have with another ISP
What do you think.

I never let sales reps in and never agree to anything over the phone.
I have always been of the opinion that if I need something I will go research it (usually on here!) and then approach the company, not the other way around! Hubby is of the same opinion.Bump due 30th December 2009 :j0 -

Totally agree. Nothing more to add.

Did he have any ID that showed he was from talktalk? I had a problem with someone claiming to be from NPower and that he could get us a discount (whole story here). I wouldn't let anyone in to be honest.
**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

If you are looking for support for your stance, you will get it here.
Are talktalk getting their contractors to work on bank holidays? If the caller was actually genuine, then they are surely on commission and would say whatever they thought would get them into your house when it normally is more difficult to get rid of them than from the doorstep. As you found, people don't like to appear rude (or over-ruled) by having someone else ask a salesman to leave.0 -
I have a notice on my door, right next to the knocker, that says "NO COLD CALLERS. NO JUNK MAIL."
I still get both. If its a cold caller, I slam the door in their face and tell them to learn to read, and if its a junk mailer, our front door is in our lounge, so from the comfort of my own sofa, I push it back out at them before they have even let go! One clearly too-thick-skinned junk mailer kept pushing it back through, til I opened the door and told him to learn to read.Mummy to

I have a notice on my door saying no door to door sales please. Some still knock and I'm afraid I am rather rude to those who refuse to listen to me. No way would I let them in.
If I need to buy something or change utilities I like to research it myself in my own time. The on-line deals are usually better, after all these sales people will be getting a commision and guess who pays it.. YOU !Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20 -
I imagine your partner felt a bit embarrassed to be belittled by you in front of a stranger. Bit of an ego deflater that I feel.0

I think your partner had been at too much of the sherry.
Never let these people into your home.We all evolve - get on with it0 -

I never let any saleman in, and just say "no thanks" and Iput the phone down if I get any telephone sellers.
I always do my own reasearch, and am VERY untrusting of cold callers and salesmen in general.
