The original post made me sad. That sort of thing is upsetting for young children. I hope that hasn't happened.

I believe in treating children equally with gifts, unless they are very young babies, or have families of their own.

Assuming of course the older children are not ginger then this clearly isn't fair.
Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.

Together we can make a difference.

one of our children only got presents this year as they got an excellent school record. The other we are getting disappointed with, despite spending numerous hours after school to perform, he just keeps struggling, we told him santa only comes to good boys who do well at school. We are hoping this positive encouragement and creating a wedge of competition with his brother will make him strive harder. He is upset about it, but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

thats well harsh if hes struggling somethings wrong and you punishing him for it wont help at all

I believe truly in survival of the fittest......I feel a bit sympathy that he was the runt of the litter so to speak, not as quick intellectually or athetic ability. more creative with arts and crafts, but as loving parents we want him to strive for something to make himself something in life.

Whatever you do as a parent, there will be someone saying that it is unfair. If you spend more on one, the other will complain; if you spend the same, one will complain that they don't have the same number of presents; the other will feel hard done by because one present was larger than theirs.

Then there will be one was allowed more freedom than the other, one got to go to a particular party that the other didn't, one got a type of top the other wanted, one got nicer shoes/pencil case/CDs/the colour iPod the other one wanted....

Whatever you do, you will probably be in the wrong with someone.

It's all part of being a parent.

And well meaning relatives just add fuel to the fire.

I think there are some clear cases of out & out favouritism here. I don't think those parents even try to be fair.
