Bruno and AF, dh and I have been thinking about sleep triggers recently, prompted by all the interesting, creative ideas on here about bedtime routines.
What I wanted to add to the debate as my little twopennorth is to try to think long term and in terms of desired family size when instigating a sleep trigger.
I've watched 2 good friends in real life start a bath, hair wash, 3 stories, song and sleep routine with baby number 1 and then watched them strained with fatigue on trying to still do this near the end of pregnancy number 2 and with newborn number 2. Newborn number 3 makes things even harder....
I'm trying to think about it as a long term planning of a working day. Assuming a baby does a 7 til 7 sleep (like lucky SB!) We parents work a 12 hr shift and sometimes have night-time on calls! If I were designing that job in the working world, I would be quite cautious about how exerting the tasks I built into the very end of the shift were. Does that make any sense?

Of course you make sense
I have been thinking not so much of sleep triggers, although i know that is necessary, but of timing. i of course will be getting in from work and hubby works nights, so i need to look at when the best time to put her down is, so that it's best for her but also allows for hubby and i to have time with her in the evening.
It's a good point you raise re other children. i'd love another one and i'd love one right now, but i know it's not the best thing for us as LO does not have a good sleeping pattern at the minute and it wouldn't be good for her or another little one.

Sugar, our 5-month baby certainly woke 3 or 4 times a night routinely, although we think reflux exacerbated that. Good luck...
Elijah is now 17 months and nursing is still a key part of his bedtime routine  not actually "to sleep" usually any more, but it's his main trigger to get to the passive state of wanting his cot if you see what I mean. We're beginning to think we need to add stuff to the bedtime routine so that when booby is dropped there are still some good triggers he will recognise!
Elliot thankfully doesn't need milk anymore to think its bedtime, hes gone to bed without it a few times (only because he was so stuffed from a late meal or simply too tired!)Mommy to Elliot (5) and Lewis (born xmas eve 11!)0 -

Morning all,
I read your bedtime routine posts with much interest. At the moment, I have a 4 month old baby who sleeps through the night. We just put her down whenever she looks tired which recently has been around 10pm, and she has been sleeping until about 9am. If we decide to put her down at any time, we just lay her in her basket/crib (occasionally she takes her soother) and she goes to sleep herself within 5 minutes. She has been like this since day dot, so I have been more than happy to let her dictate and not try to manipulate any kind of routine. However, I decided that in the new year, I would try to work towards some sort of routine in preparation for going back to work later in the year so it’s interesting to see what others do.
It must have been a night for screaming babies last night. Holly screamed the house down for about 20 minutes. I have never seen anything like it. She looked like she was in real pain – bright red and choking from screaming. She never ever does anything like that. We had her outside for a few minutes in case she was too hot. I stripped her nappy off her in case something was hurting her. She would not take soother/bottle etc. It was awful. Evenutally she took a breather when we put her cot lightshow projector thing on and DH shoved some Calpol down her. Then she was calm enough to take her bottle. We figured it might be teething related and she went to sleep fine after that and is in great spirits this morning. It was very worrying though.
Buttons – how is Keira this morning? I would take her to the doctors if you are worried.
Maz – lovely pictures of your boys.0 -
okay, i think i'm like caz and have an addication to prams/strollers. well to be honest, i've never got the one i wanted (except for our one that had the carry cot) so i am looking again as the one we were given i'm not a fan off and even my MIL said about it, so i am going to look at another one.
a question ... maclaren or silver cross???? i would like a footmuff as LO is terrible with blankets and will kick her feet like there's no tomorrow. saying that, i had a mama and papas foot muff that the zip has gone on because of how she kicks.
oh what to do ...i am searching online for a good deal (to soften up hubby) but i should be doing my work (well i am, but just not as quickly as i could)
