Apologies if this has been missed, does it have to stay at 0 or below all day or is it just if it hits it?

  • you can go on teh direct gov website, to check if you are getting a payment by entering ur website, i can post the link cos i am a new user.

when i check mine today it said this:

The Met Office have notified the Department for Work and Pensions that no periods of very cold weather have occurred in the BB1 postcode area between 1 November 2009 and 16 December 2009 that would trigger a Cold Weather Payment. No Cold Weather Payments have been made.

I dont think they actually realise it is now the 22nd dec and we have had snow for 6 days lol.

It's been down to minus 7 here and we still have 6" snow lying frozen but we dont get one because the weather station is 800ft lower down than I am !

    Yes I know that!
My question was does it have to be 0 or below for THE WHOLE DAY.

IT has to be below zero for the whole week! 7 days. If it drops below it for half an hour on day 6 then you've had it !

No it doesn't have to be for whole days, just has to be freezing or below each day at some point for the seven days.

I am not sure if this is still the case but it use to be that if the weather people predicted it would be freezing or below for seven days it would trigger payment too as they worked on basis people saw forecast and put their heating on as they assumed they'd get a payment. Not sure if this is still the case though.
  • Enter your postcode to see if you area meets the temp. requirements. The site is due to be updated.

;) Maybe they are waiting for day 7 to finish before they update it.

    This is pretty unambiguous :

"This year you will get £25 when the average temperature where you live is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over seven consecutive days during the period from 1 November to 31 March."

The payments really help, but the way it's calculated is annoying and somewhat arbitrary. If you have six days of -6C and the next day it's 1C you get nothing.

The last week has cost me. I'm warming my main room to about 15C tops - chilly but can't afford more. I've got £20 to last from now to 28th (being completely frugal haven't even bought cards) and unless there is a cold weather payment I'm expecting to run out of food or heating during this period. As you might imagine, I'm checking every day for the pay out. In fact, hoping it will stay cold so I get it and have an adequate amount of money to keep warm...
