Some of us NEED the money or we go cold.
The thing is though, is there thatmuch of a difference between 1oc and 0oc? cos you would not get it at 1oc so why people are relying on it so much is beyond me, it's always freezing at this time of year

  • People who are on DLA do not automatically qualify for a CWP (cold weather payment). They have to be in reciept of one of the qualifying benefits already listed above. These are processed by JCP (job centre plus offices - sometimes social fund dept). The criteria for these being paid has already been listed above.

WFP (winter fuel payments) are made to all people who turned 60 before the qualifying week in Sept - 21st - 27th ( i think!) 2009, regardless if they are in reciept of any benefits or not. These payments are made by The Pension Service. Tel: 0845 6060265 or if you are not in reciept of any benefits Tel: 08457 15 15 15.

Ive just been reading over everyones comments and it seems some people think you wont get a cold weather payment if there is 6 days at -6 then 1 day at 1 degree. but on the website it says its based on the "average mean" temperature over 7 consecutive days.. so to me that means if its -6 for 6 days and 1 for one day you should still get your payment, as the average temp over the 7 days would still be below o degrees

Maybe thats not correct but thats how i interpreted it to be.. may be a good idea to check with local jobcenter to be sure. :)

To clear up the average temperature issue:
"Payments are made from the Social Fund to certain recipients of certain means-tested benefits during periods of cold weather. A period of cold weather is defined as seven consecutive days in which the average mean daily temperature is 0°C or less. Payments can be ‘triggered’ by actual temperatures recorded during the previous seven days falling below this threshold, or if temperatures are forecast to do so by the Meteorological Office for the day of the forecast and six days hence."

    From p2 here.

    Or
A cold weather period is a period of 7 consecutive days during which the average mean daily temperature is recorded, or forecasted to be, zero degrees celsius or below1.

Unlke you, if I get the payment I can't spent it on what I want. I would need to spend it on the things I'm short of - food, central heating, clothing. I am ex-bankrupt due to poor health and have no credit facility, no overdraft, no savings. My bank account has dipped below £1 about 5 times this year. I have £30 a week for all food, travel, clothing, heating, household items.. everything except rent, water, phone, elec. I can't magic up extra money from anywhere it's all accounted for. I have £10 to last me till next Tuesday, no gas on meter, no cards or presents for anyone, not enough food... So please spare me the trite comments.. some of us really do live hand to mouth.
