the fact is being tardy on posting puts you on the back foot.

I sold an old MP3 player on eBay for £28 + postage (Royal Mail 2nd class recorded).

    The auction ended on 9/12/2009.

I state in my auctions that I usually take 2 days to post, and RM takes around 4 days to move a parcel 2nd class.

As it happens I was a bit busy last week with everything and didn't manage to post it until Tuesday 15th - Post office said it would still arrive in time for XMAS.

Buyer is now hassling me saying he wants a refund if the item does not arrive today because he has made travel arrangements and wont be able to sign for the parcel which is a gift for his son.

What are my obligations as a private seller?

    p.s. I have 100% feedback from over 430 purchases and sales.[/QUOTE

They did not pay on the 9th they paid on the evening of the 10th meaning I only had saturday morning to post... and to be honest I work all week so enjoy a lie on Saturdays.
Buyer paid via paypal Thursday 10/12/2009 @ 1.07pm

1.07pm ... hardly the evening is it?? If I was your buyer I would be livid, I have paid more for some items recently based purely on the desatch time, I'd rather pay a little more and know its going to arrive by xmas, perhaps your buyer bid on your item instead of another one because of the despatch time you stated??
    Mortgage Total: £50,720/ £75,000
    Mortgage Overpayments Pot £1587

    I'm not bothered about DSRs
Maybe not, but ebay are (why do you think they bought them in, just to look pretty and give buyers some more boxes to tick?).

Low DSRs will give you several headaches, you're probably already getting lowered standing in search results for example (meaning you'll get lower prices because people can't find your stuff), and if you're not careful your account will be limited because of the low ratings (this could be anything from a week ban, to a lifetime one. And if you get banned on one account, thats it. You can't open another at the same address, whether postal or IP).
Also, 4.4 on P+P charges seems to imply you start your auctions as low as you can, then inflate the P+P to save yourself a few pence in fees.

Use the DSRs for what they're meant for (as a seller): a diagnostic tool. You need to post quicker, charge less for P+P (maybe start the item for a quid more than you wanted to, and charge less P+P than it'll actually cost to post. If the buyers sees you've paid more to post then they paid you in P+P, you should get 5* every time), and communicate with your buyers (even if it's just a "thanks for your purchase, I'll post it in the morning" after they've paid)

So they are going to kick me off with 450+ 100% feedback and 4 1/2 stars on 17 DSRs

    yeah... ok

No but you wont get as many sales or such good prices as you will be so low in the search standings. If they keep going down you will be suspended. All you are managing to do is exclude yourself from the customer base. Its your decision but only an idiot wouldn't address a situation that they can do something about so they can earn more money.

If you wish to continue selling with any success on ebay you need to look at the effect DSRs can have on you. But given your attitude I doubt you will and it'll just be one more poor seller leaving ebay which hey is a good thing

Your listing on 320457251417 says it will go first class recorded, and will arrive in 3-4 days - no wonder the buyer has the hump with you!

wow absolutely!! now leaving it this long and then only posting second class is awful, but with this new info of the buyer paying for first class, this is abissmal!!! i cannot believe u left it 3 working days and used a lower postage ses6jwg. thats disgusting service. you slowed their parcel down by almost a working week, because of your laziness and lies. you should be ashamed of yourself. have u told the buyer u only sent second class?! i will definately not buy anything from you!!
A good friend can tell you what is the matter with you in a minute ...:A
