Buyer Hassling Me

I sold an old MP3 player on eBay for £28 + postage (Royal Mail 2nd class recorded).

The auction ended on 9/12/2009.

I state in my auctions that I usually take 2 days to post, and RM takes around 4 days to move a parcel 2nd class.

As it happens I was a bit busy last week with everything and didn't manage to post it until Tuesday 15th - Post office said it would still arrive in time for XMAS.

Buyer is now hassling me saying he wants a refund if the item does not arrive today because he has made travel arrangements and wont be able to sign for the parcel which is a gift for his son.

What are my obligations as a private seller?

p.s. I have 100% feedback from over 430 purchases and sales.

I'd be asking where my item was as well, if it was 9 days after I'd paid.

Whether he'll get a refund's up to Paypal, he could open an Item not Received claim, but as he's not able to sign for it, you might win (because it's their fault they've not got it).

That said, taking 7 days to post the item could invalidate you from the Paypal protection in the first place.

P.S. He won't care what your feedback rating is when he leaves his, and it's not really relevent anyway.

I wouldn't care what your feedback was either - I would be more concerned about having a disappointed son on Christmas Day.
Did you communicate the delay in postage to your seller?

I think I would have sent it Special Delivery in lieu of the delay - not stuck with second class.
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

  • or you could have at least upgraded to 1st (doesnt make a whole ton of difference to speed of delivery but would have at least shown willing to your buyer)

whether you are a person emptying cupboards or a pro-seller i think its always best to think how you would feel with that kind of service, as a buyer would you be happy the seller has taken a week to post so close to xmas ??

To be fair if the buyer was going away they should have asked you to ensure you could post it in time to arrive but as everyone has said nearly a week is a very long time to post something and you should paid the extra few pence to send it 1st at least.
I think your going to have to just accept whatever happens and use it as a learning experience. If the item is returned to you as its not signed I would just refund the money and leave it.

agree a week is a long time especially in the run up to xmas, I would be hassling you too

I posted the last of my stuff on the 15th 1st class just to be sure (evem though all items were listed 2nd class) and most arrived the next day - theres not that much difference in cost between 1st & 2nd class

I would be expecting a neg or you could maybe offer a refund on the postage to sweeten him up to a neutral which keeps your 100%

I learnt on here no point sending recorded as proof of postage covers you up to £39 same as recorded. costs you extra & means it has to be signed for

Where does the time go?
  • you say you state that you dispatch within 2 working days, so in effect you broke the terms of your contract/delivery service. the LEAST you can do is part refund for the inconvenience, and learn for next time! Merry Xmas all :)

Hi I sent an ebay item on the 1st of december it arrived on the 15th, I sent it royal mail 1st class recorded. the buyer was giving me hassle but luckily she got the parcel and all got sorted out.

Royal mail has caused me loads of problems, the thing is if you have said you will deliver the item in a time frame if the time frame is not met then you will have to pay back the money, It leave a bad taste in your mouth I know ebay dont care about sellers in these case's in fact if you have 400+ feedback you like me have been using it a fair while in the past 2 yrs ebay has made it so hard for sellers. Unfairly!

I would suggest contacting the byuer and trying to work it out, or tell them that you will give them a full refund inc p+p once the item is returned to you. make sure they send it back recorded delivery aswell some guy ripped me off like that saying he sent it back but never did, paypal give him a refund aswell.

I'd be mad if I were your buyer! You should send it first at the very least.
