Rant about unsuitable xmas gifts
Comments
-
I personally would allow your child to open and receive the gifts however if they are that unsuitable then my guess is the other girls mother has bought the gifts rather than your daughters friend and so after xmas i would make a point of seeing the mother and telling her how in appropriate the presents were, if you do nothing and say nothing god knows what she might buy next year "something from Ann Summers ?"2010 - Goals

It's not a thong is it?!
I think that's about the only thing I wouldn't let my daughter have.
Oh, that and trashy slogan t shirts.
And short skirts.
And anything 'Playboy'.
And hair extensions.
And a tattoo.
And a piercing.
(I'll edit if I think of something else :rotfl:)
ETA : I'd let your daughter open them, but be honest on how you feel on each thing, and let her know exactly why you feel that way.
(So explain she's too young/it's tarty/not appropriate etc)Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
If I feel someone has given anything to my girls that I think is inappropriate, i'll tell them.
I want my 9 year olds as 9 year olds, 10yo as 10...and so on. Things will happen and we will deal with them at the time, but ultimately they'll dress as what the majority of children their age do.
Other peoples children are their concern, whether it meets with my ideals or not, but I would definitely say something, but that may just be me. They can be 18 when they are 18 etc0 -

You really think that's only a joke don't you?
Nah, I'm kidding, I dont think she would be that inappropriate. I hope.
I've already decided to very tactfully broach the subject about not swapping presents next year due to cost. That way I wont hurt anyone's feelings and we wont have this situation again.Herman - MP for all!0 -
hun let her open it then have a laff with her about how unsuitable it is - if she wants it tell her its ok but it stays in her room! dont make too big an issue of it - it isnt really is it?
as long as its not !!!!!! or anything!0 -
If my mum had done that to me I would of been devestated....
you said " .the presents were opened to check what they were as I had a feeling they would be unsuitable"
are you sure you hadnt already decided the present was unsuitable before you even opened it...
I would dream of opening a gift that had been given to my daughter, you may find after she opens it she doesnt even like it anyway. I would leave it to her to decide. Just gently guide her in the right direction.
Its nice being a cool mum, they will come and tell you everything when they get older. my step daughter is 18 just had a major issue and she came to me for help, as she knows I wont shout get angry, will not judge her, just give good advice..People who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones...
It is much easier to see other people's failings than our own.0 -

 I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at but I based my concerns on the previous years presents which have been getting more and more 'older' and the way the daughter now dresses and acts which isn't on a par with her age.

Well we all parent in the best way for us. I daresay you may do things that I wouldn't.

I also have a 26 year old and a 20 year old so it's not like this is the first time round the block for me.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Just had another thought....how would you have known?Herman - MP for all!0 -
i dont personally see anything wrong with opening the gifts to check what they were as it was something really outrageous then i would not be allowing my daughter to even see yet alone keep the gift, i feel that they cannot be that outrageous otherwise you would have not re wrapped them up, if your daughter had then asked where the presents were - she may not even remember what with children having so many presents at xmas anyway, i would have no hesitation in saying to her the gifts were in appropriate and she was not having them.2010 - Goals

No, it wont be a big issue.
I wonder though, what's the point in having principles and certain standards you follow when rasing your children, if you allow them to have things from other people that you would not buy for them yourself because you deem them to be unsuitable? Isn't that slightly hypocritical?
' No pet, I'm sorry you can't have that because I think you're too young and it's completely unsuitable ......but if someone else buys it for you, then it doesn't matter you can have it after all'
Bit of a mixed message there methinks.Herman - MP for all!0
