Rant about unsuitable xmas gifts

I'm feeling really bad now.
I've bought my daughter (4) a Bratz doll and a make-up case for Christmas. I thought she'd really like the doll as it has long blond hair and shiny trousers (she wanted a disco doll). It never occcured to me for one second that someone would think it "sexualised". My daughters have loads of Barbies (and a few Disney Princess and Bratz dolls) - I wouldn't consider them any better or worse than Bratz dolls personally and certainly don't think that they are implying anything inappropriate to my kids.
My girls went through a bratz / barbie phase. It didn't sexualise DDs, nor did they pick up any ideas about the dolls being sexualised, they just played as little girls do.
DDs are older now and dolls wouldn't make their way onto christmas lists. Playing with them when they were younger did no harm thoughThere is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -
I just wanted to add in about the Playboy thing- mums, don't worry, I loved Playboy stuff when I was younger and only because it was all pink and had a bunny on it! I know you will probably think "What will people think when they see my daughter with this" if it is clothing etc and that is all well and good as adults who see it know the connotations of the logo, but be reassured that I had NO idea what Playboy actually was and thus did not associate it with exploitation/bimbo-ness etc. Just pink! So if they get something Playboy that will stay in the house (I still have a massive pink cushion) don't worry that they are going to become glamour models :-)
I enjoy reading all the comments by mothers on here, it is a whole new world for me and makes me appreciate my mum more! (1 2 3... aaaaaawww)0 -
When I was about 9 or 10 my nanna bought me a set of thongs from the catalogue. My mam told me that nanna had been confused between size 8 and age 8 (you never know she may have been!!) Mam asked if she could wear them and buy me something that would fit... I had no problem at all with this. Thong knickers re- appeared a few years later (unworn lol) and I tried them on and gave them up promptly as scratchy and uncomfyDon't suffer alone - if you are experiencing Domestic Abuse contact the National Domestic Abuse Helplines

You must still be pretty young then! It's only been out a few years hasn't it? (The branded stuff I mean)

When my daughter asked for Playboy stuff and I told her No, she asked why, so I told her the truth and explained just what 'Playboy' is!
She soon shut up and never asked for the stuff again :rotfl:Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I am 23 (time is flying)
Bless you for instilling some feminism in your daughter :-) My mum got me a couple of Playboy things without really reflecting on it I think, but not til I was 14 or so!0 -

Ahh, well my daughter will be 12 on new years day and I think she first asked for the stuff when she was 10.
She's been flicking through Sky before and come across the playboy mansion programme ~ she soon switched to another channel quickly! :rotfl::rotfl:Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
Some parents seem to treat their children as fashion accessories. Or as their "best mates".0

Well, my eldest DS is 10 and if he got something inappropriate as a gift, I know I could sit him down and tell him my thoughts on it and that he should put it away until he is a bit older (depending what it was of course) There wouldn't be an issue with it.
If asked by the gift giver, I would say honestly that I thought him a little young for *insert unsuitable gift here* just now, but thank them anyway. If they didn't ask, I would keep schtum lol.
Sometimes people just dont think that other people have different viewpoints until it is gently pointed out to them.
Or not so gently.......like a few years ago when I discovered my then 20 year old brother was teaching my son to play Grand Theft Auto....grrr :rolleyes:Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. I'm glad I'm not the only 'strict' parent on here. I can't abide the bunny brand or Fcuk and refuse to buy it. I've always explained why I feel its inappropriate and thankfully we've had no major issues. I've learnt to compromise a bit especially as they have thier own money. (girls are nearly15 and 11.5)
I'm not a fan of body piercing or tattoos either so the rule on that is 'when you can afford your own rent you can do it if you still want to but as long as I'm putting the roof over your heads you have to respect my rules'. Its working so far!!??!!One life.0 -

This other girl in question has her own copy of this.
My son has this too but my daughter is not allowed in his room when he's playing it.
