I know it's not much help but everyone is guessing that the buyer has broken the phone. My thoughts would be more along the lines that the phone is perfectly fine and he will keep this and send back something else (box of rubbish etc).

    He still could.

If by some miracle he manages to return something to the OP, I'd ask the postman to stand there as a witness while I open it. That way if a load of rubbish comes out at least you have a witness...my postie is very obliging and has done this for me occasionally.

Refuse to sign for it. I did this once. Explained to my postie and opened before signing (was only recorded though). Not sure if they are really supposed to do this. Turned out ok though so signed. If it gets returned to the depot for you to sign and collect not sure they'll be as 'accomodating' as they won't know you.

any postie that allows this is a fool
how do they explain coming back with a signed for package that is opened?
what does the postie do if you just shut the door with the package?

There will be a note on the tracking that delivery was refused so that will not protect you from any paypal claim

The regular postie - not the van delivery guy, who's cool - has two rules. If it will fit through the letterbox, shove it in. If it won't, dump it on the doorstep, ring the doorbell and !!!!!! off. Recorded delivery? Ha. I haven't been asked for sign for one in about the three or four years we've had that postman.
