i got given a load of pears this week - also very hard (at the moment)
i shall keep them in trays/ crates - until they soften up a bit - then i shall be making wine with them :beer:saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
made loads last year :beer:0 -
Stew a load & freeze it in small portions to make pear crumbles & sponge puddings in winter.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0

A neighbour kindly gave me an enormous bag of pears yesterday and I obviously want to use them all. A friend is giving me her recipe for pickled pears which are delicious with cold meat, and I have poached a few, but there will still be tons left over. Any suggestions/recipes would be gratefully received!0

chutney! chutney! chutney!

ok my old pre war book says cook all ingredients together until result is palatable with no flavour too strong, so i'd assume equal sugar and vinegar?
BUT book says noooo!
most of them are a ratio of 1 veg/fruit/both: 1/4 sugar : 1/3 ish vinegar; so for 8lbs veg it's 2lbs sugar and 2.5-3pts vinegar.
remember, a chutney's flavour improves as it keeps, so don't eat it straight away. 3 months is the average maturation time and it keeps for years and years.0 -

Pears are pretty much interchangable with apples so you can stew them to use in crumbles, cakes and pies or as with ice cream or youghurt..or juice them or use in fruit smoothies, dry slices for later or use in fruit leathers and even wine making.
Love pears lol
