I bought a new Sony Ericsson K750 in March.
There were various intermittent problems that went away before I bothered to do anything about them.
A few weeks ago, several of the buttons wouldn't work or performed incorrect actions. One of these was the 'confirm' button, so I couldn't unlock the phone or use most of the functions. This went on for two days, and all the usual turning it off, removing battery etc, didn't work.
As instructed, I sent it to the Sony Ericsson repair centre.
Now they have written to me to say that their investigation shows that the phone has been damaged by 'liquid ingress' and is beyond repair and not replacable under the guarantee. If I want the non-working phone back, I have to pay £11.75.
I know that the phone has never been in or dangerously near water, so what could have happened? Do I have any chance of getting a replacement phone?
The phone was free with a contract, so I didn't pay on a credit card. I don't think that my home insurance covers phones, and I wouldn't want to ruin my no claims history. Anyway, as I don't know what happened to it, I can't really submit a claim.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

ask them for proof of water damage firstly, a few phones now have a deliberate strip or something to show water damage dont know if k750is one of them
if it is water damaged maybe water in a bag, had a drop go on it on a table, rain maybe even? then most places refuse to repair it unfortunately not much to do
random market stalls etc do say they will repair them depends if you want the risk of shelling out when it may not be repaired properly
why do you have to pay to get the phone back without being repaired? was it the retailer network that sent it away? were you told of the charge before you sent it?
tbh on another thread someone said you can buy the phone for about £70 in which case not much point getting it replaced under insurance or anything maybe

I'm sure it is, but how does it happen with no water?

My husbands phone is knackered too. His own fault though. Saturday night he left it in his pocket and went into the 'foam' party in the nightclub!!! (yes i hang my head in shame!!). You wouldn't think he will be 34 on Thursday.

for example, walking into a hot bathroom from a cold room causes condensation and may trigger the moisture stickers to turn red indicating water damage

If you're convinced that the alleged water damage did not occur whilst the phone was in your care, I would contact the retailler and ask them to replace the phone, since they must have sold you one with water damage.

If they refuse, contact Trading Standards. I doubt it will be easy to resolve in your favour - essentially it's your word against the retaillers.

Interestingly, I have heard of a number of people being told that their phone is water damaged in the past year or so. Each time they insisted that they hadn't taken the phone near any water, and each time the phone involved was a Sony Ericsson...

ive just had a portable dab radio in for repair full of mashed banana

condensation is often the cause of corrosion found inside which stops them needing to do a warrenty repair, although it is not always the cause of the problem
  • I dropped my Phone in water for only a second yesterday and It wont switch on, Sim is ok.
Is there anything I can do to repair it?
I'm on a sim only deal with virgin so option of insurance replacement or upgrade are not possible.
I need a handset desparately without a huge expense.
    Any Suggestions Please.
