    Yes, you have.

BT now impose a 12 month inital contract for line rental as a result of other companies telling potential customers to get BT to reconnect the line and then jump ship. As a result, BT were paying Openreach to reconnect lines (you may consider it to be just a flicking of a switch but it's often more than that and, in any case, sending an engineer from a separate company to the exchange to do it costs money) and were then losing the customer.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

As the exchnages are now digital ther term "flicking the switch"` may be obsolete but in essence all they do is reprogram the exchnage to open your line with a new number. perhaps the BT rep can correct me if I am wrong.
My broadband provider PlusNet want £65 unless I agree to stay with them for another year! PlusNet is another BT company in disguise so either way BT have you by the short and curlies!
  • i have recently moved into a brand new flat that has a BT connection in the wall. Will I have to pay a connection charge? The line is already in place and will just require a flick of a switch to activate it.

    thanks.

Yes, someone has to pay BT for the work involved in providing the line. They have done the wiring in advance as it makes it easier to put the wiring in while it is being built.

My wife and I own a new build property which I have recently rented out (I know, lucky me, but I have no pension so this is all I have to show for my old age, and anyway the building society own quite a lot of it!)

The tenants say BT is going to charge them the £125 for line installation. They are taking a BT phone package, should they be entitled to free installation or does that only count when BT are simply reactivating an line which is already in place?

An "official" BT answer to this one would be really useful!

    Thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware, you do have to pay the fee for new build properties.

No, they are not entitled to free installation. The first person to order a BT line at a new build will be charged the standard connection fee (£124.99) - or more if there is 'out of the ordinary' work to be done.

Your "or does that only count ..." sentence is usually correct.

With the BT free installation offer I seem to remember somebody mentioning a number that you can call to use up the 10 calls you have to make a month, rather than say calling an 0800 number or a friends land line 10 times, as most of the calls I need to make are to mobiles and these are not included.

    Good Afternoon,
Apologies for the simple questions but I am really struggling to find a way round the bt re connection charge on our new house, I am just wondering if because I use sky for my calls package would they be able to re connect me and I pay them for my line rental or is only BT that can do this??
    Apologies again
