After reading this thread I rang up BT to have the line re-connected in a rental house I've moved into for 6months (but will be transfering the contract back to my old address house once the repairs are done).

I asked to take advantage of the free connection offer and was told that the only package that came with free connection cost ~£45 a month - line rental, free inclusive calls, BT Broadband, BT Vision - basically everything they offer.

This is obviously far more than I want to spend, and was wondering if anyone could be more specific as to what to ask for when phoning up? The very first person I spoke to actually said there were no free connection offers and I only got offered this when I rang back.

    Thank-you.

The free connection offer does NOT require you to sign up for anything other than line rental and the lowest calls plan (the Unlimited Weekend Plan). If you were told anything else, you were LIED TO (probably because whoever you spoke to was on commission and was trying to bump up his/her take).

However, you do have to agree to an 18 month contract and to making 10 chargeable or inclusive calls per month via BT.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

  • I'm currently with P.O. and happy with their inclusive free calls to mobiles and select international calls at weekends.Heinz is always advising to go with BT as they cannot block overider calls due to their unique terms of trading.Should I take advantage of the free connection offer from BT just in case.Thanking you all in advance.First post!

    I bloomin love these forums....!!

Moving house next week. Was told I had to pay £125 for the reconnection to the new house as the present occupants are with Virgin Media and the line in the house is "dead" (whatever that means...!)

I told them about the free line connection offer for the 18month contract, and was told that I had to take broadband too.

I quoted him the offer page that someone previosuly put up:
    http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Notice09_boo/2-FrameworkImpl337855.htm

...and that shut him up...!! £125 refunded to the bill
    Order processing.

THANKS SO MUCH GUYS - this forum just saved me £125!!

Welcome to the MSE forums pocketslint.

If you're happy with your current provider and cannot identify a specific cost advantage of changing, stay as you are.

I think you can use override providers with the Post Office anyway so you may, without knowing it, have the best of both worlds. Try sigining up with 18185 and, after a couple of days, see whether you can use the prefix to call a mobile.

I have been trying to get the phone connected for a freind who moved into a house where the phonelines are still in working order and a BT engineer has told her that it would not be a full connection charge. I first was put through to India and told there was no phone service at that address and it would be £124.99 connection charge. I explained and got no joy. I then did an online application and used a chat advisor and he waved the connection charge that kept coming up when I explained about the Bt engineer having told us it was live. After having no contact for 4 days I clicked in to check the progress of the order. It wouldn't accept the reference number they emailed me on placing the order.
I phoned India again. He told me the order was not correct as there was no connection charge. He said he was having to speak to a supervisor and came back to say he didn't want me to hold too long so he would call back. They never called.

If you phone up (it can't be done online) and ask for the free installation offer you will be able to take the Unlimited Weekend Plan for £12.50 or £11.25 with paper-free billing. This is the cheapest amount you can pay BT for a phone line.

This offer is provided you take an 18 month contract and make 10 calls per month.

Am I right in assuming that as long as I used the phone for inclusive calls 10 times a month there will be no surcharge. I take it that inclusive calls on the evenings and weekend package are free for up to one hour to ordinary local and national landline numbers. It seems confusing to me because what is the point in this if the calls are free anyway. Then again if I leave home for a month my telephone bill will increase during my absense unless I ask a neighbour to use it ten times.
