    Hi Sunnychuckle

I am sorry to hear that you have been receiving these bills for the previous tenant in error. I would like to take a look at this to see if I can get to the bottom of these bills are still being sent. I will also be able to check at that stage whether the connection charge has been raised correctly.

Please could you email btcare@bt.com with any bill or account details that are stated on the bill your received. Please also include your forum username. Once I have received those details I will investigate this and reply to you directly.

    Thanks

    Paddy

Thank you Paddy but please note I will need proper proof not just a phone call from BT telling me that there was not a live BT line when I moved in!

Is this offer available for new builds aswell?

New builds are included as long as the work is a simple connection and requires no extra man hours or expensive line plant work needs to be done (usually only single builds get the extra charge where there are no poles/cables etc)
The offer has been extended to 31/01/2010

    Hi BT representative,

I sent an email to BT in June and did not receive any reply. I just dug the message back out again as I still want to sign up for BT basic.

I called BT back in June in order to sign up for your services as I had
just moved into my new house. I wanted to take advantage of the free
installation before the end of June offer that is currently running.
Because I had been put out of work recently (through no fault of my
own) I wanted to sign up for the BT Basic package. When I spoke to the
lady she informed me that my telephone line was not active anymore so
I would therefore be liable for the full £122.50 charge to send an
engineer out to reconnect the phone. I explained that of course my
phone line was not active because I had just moved in to my new
property but all the relevant phone fixtures [sockets, phone lines to
house and so on] were in fact intact.

Upon further investigation it turned out that the reason that I was
liable for the £122.50 was not because the phone line was inactive as
was originally stated but because I was signing up for BT Basic. I
would not have to pay the installation charge if I signed up with any
other [more expensive] package. If I signed up for the standard line
rental of £11.25 this would cost me £135 over 12 months [£11.25 *
12 = £135]. But if I signed up for BT basic it would cost me £175.30
    [(£13.2 * 4) + £122.50] over 12 months.

So for your contribution to your corporate responsibility and as a
company who 'are committed to making sure that people with low incomes
can still afford a phone service with us if they want one.' I think
this is really a mockery to make a person on benefit £40.30 worse off over 12
months. The concept of BT basic is in fact a deception.

I feel that by alienating your potential customers that you are doing a disservice not only to your customers but also to yourselves. I would appreciate if you would either stop lying to your customers or offer less well off customers like myself the opportunity to take advantage of offers that are available to other customers.

    Hi Jaimito,

BT Basic is a social telephony product offer by BT so that people on low income could have a telephone service. BT Basic is a basic telephone service and anybody signing up to this package is excluded from sighing up to any other special offer for the telephone while on BT Basic. This also includes the free connection offer.

The free connection offer does have a minimum of an 18 month term and is only available on the Unlimited Weekend Plan, the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan or the Unlimited Anytime Plan.

The only reason the connection charge would have been raised when you ordered BT Basic is because an Openreach engineer would be needed to activate the telephone service at that address. The connection charge would be raised to cover this cost.

Under the BT Basic plan it is possible to split the connection charge over your first few bills instead having to the charge raised in one go on your first bill. If you would still like to order BT Basic please drop me an email with your BT account details and please include your forum username. Our email address can be found in the bio section on our profile.

    Thanks

  • Hi
I am after a little advice, i am moving to a new build property on 29-12-2009 and have been quoted the above connection fee but have since read i may be abke to get it free if i sign uo for 18 months. But a month or so ago i signed up to 12 month contract with free weekend calls or somesuch as did not know would be offered a move so soon. Would this stop me getting the 18 month free connection deal thing? if no what is it called and who do i ask to speak to when ringing back to discuss (currrently agreed to the charge:mad: and engineer coming 12-01-2010). Any money i can save will help loads as moving is mega expensive at any time but funds stretched beyond breaking point at mo re xmas and the move.
    Thank you in advance.

No, it would not stop you getting Sky Talk CPS (i.e. leaving line rental with BT).

HOWEVER, Sky Talk CPS would prevent you making any calls via BT and, so, you could not comply with the 10 calls per month REQUIREMENT.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
