I'm so confused! Have just come off the phone with BT who confirmed that the flat we're due to move into does not have a BT line connected and we'll have to pay for reconnection. He didn't mention the offer, but I know it exists so when I've got my head round it I'll mention it to them!

If we take out the Unlimited Weekend Plan at £11.25 per month, I get free connection. It's an 18 month contract and I have to make 30 chargeable (this is the bit that's worrying me) calls every three months for those 18 months.

Chargeable calls. Does that mean, calls not included in my Unlimited Weekend Plan calls? So, mid-week calls that will cost me extra on top of my £11.25 a month? And if I don't make these calls, what will that cost me?

Ok, after doing some further reading I've discovered another thread dedicated to this complicated offer! Looks like both chargeable and inclusive calls count, so that problem is cleared up. Thanks!

I just moved into a rented property where the previous tenants who moved out a week ago DID have a phone.
I rang up BT and find out I have to pay a £125 connection fee. I argued a lot and threatened to go to sky which at first I did not intend to do. However sky offered the connection fee for £25 with £36 a month for unlimited ADSL phone + HD variety pack. How the hell BT are still in business with this terrible retail service is beyond me.

Is it just a case of calling sky and discussing or is there a certain department I should contact or offer I should qoute...

We want Sky full package and their line rental but only so we can get O2 broadband not sky... wonder if they will still make an offer on the line connection.

I'm just about to move into an old cottage and have been told by BT that I'll need to pay a reconnection charge of £122.50 to activate the line as it's not been used for three years. The projected cost of getting connected and a using a basic broadband package is over £40 a month. This has surprised me somewhat as I've just moved back to the UK after six years abroad where I had unlimited broadband acess for nothing.

Would anybody here be kind enough to tell me if this is a realistic pricing and if the reconnection charge is absolutely necessary?

I'm interested in any advice people might have on alternative deals & packages, however, I would prefer to use BT if possible.

    Cheers :j

Welcome to the MSE forums them.

The realistic price at the moment for the installation or reconnection of a BT residential landline is nothing (see HERE).

You have to agree to the T&Cs (18 month contract, making 10 chargeable or inclusive calls each month and so on) but it's a real bargain. I'd suggest you opt for the lowest calls package (the Unlimited Weekend Plan) to start with and then, via this site and the HERE link in my signature below, consider your requirements.

Don't accept any waffle when you call. If the person you speak to tries to refuse you the offer or denies Notice 06/09 exists, ask for the COT (Customer Options Team) and start again.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hi everyone, I'm after some advice...

Basically I'm moving into a newly built apartment complex of which I'll be renting a 1 bedroom apartment. The apartment comes equipped with a load of phone sockets.

First of all, I'm only planning on renting this apartment for 6 months.

I'm looking to get connected to a phone line and get broadband. Now, I understand the post office do a connection for free, as long as you go with them for ~£10p/m for a minimum of a 3 month contract. Is this correct?

The other thing I'm wondering about is that while I've been searching for a broadband provider, alot of the providers specify the need for a BT land line. Even if I'm with the Post Office and they've connected me up, is it still considered a BT line? Or do I need BT to connect me up?

Finally, I've read in my tenants manual that there is one master phone connection socket, and the rest are slave connections. Will these slave connections need connected up, and if so, will I have to get the Post Office/BT around to do that for me?

    Thanks.

Although if you do actually plan on using the line to make phone calls, you could argue that the instalation price is actually £53.10.

If you already had a BT line and agreed to a 12 month rolling contract, then you would get the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan for no additional cost. With the "free" instalation to get the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan you have to pay £2.95 per month extra, £53.10 over the 18 months.

Or you could just have the basic Unlimited Weekend package, which goes back to Heinz being right.

.... which was why my second paragraph was:
