BT Connection Charges (merged threads)

Help! I've read through this thread (but it's very long, so have probably missed the answer to my question along the way!) and am still a little confused.
We're due to move into a new (not new build, it has tenants in at the moment) in a month. The building isn't served by cable, which is all we've ever had so this whole phone line malarky is confusing!
Really we only want broadband, possibly digital TV but we'll decide that when we work out the cost of getting the BT line, line rental and broadband package! Can someone just confirm I'm correct in my thinking here:
See if property has a BT line already. If not, get connected to BT and pay the connection charge.
Choose the right line rental and broadband (and possibly TV) package. I think here I can go with any provider for my line rental? Doesn't have to be BT?
So, am I right in thinking that's what we'll need to do? Hopefully the property will already have a BT line (as there are tenants in at the mo and the area isn't served by cable). Fingers crossed, I don't fancy that £100+ charge!0 -

I'm moving into a new build at the end of the month.
I know I need to get the BT line activated, using free activation and 18 month subscription.
I want broadband and want to use Virgin.
Now with Virgin you can get Broadband for £15 or Broadband + Evening and Weekend calls for £12.
Can I still get the free BT connection but use Virgin for my calls, or do I have to use BT calls?

Cheers and sorry for the repost. My broadband at home is through a 3G card at the moment which isn't great! I take your point. I just thought they wouldn't be that desperate for lines or space in the cabinet / exchange they would be ripping out redundant cable but even so I guess if there is something there it might be out of date. I will take WhoKilledBambi's advice and check for a dial tone.
I know about the free connection but there are stipulations right? I'm not sure if it is going to be possible for me to make 10 calls a month. At our last property my GF took out a mobile phone contract and part of that deal was using Orange for our calls. I'm not sure if we are still obligated to use them, hence why I haven't gone down that road yet.0 -

Hi, just another question, I already have a BT line, would I be able to get another line at the house installed with a new number, on this offer?
Thank you. Don't want to look a fool when I call!0 -
The first line on that 06/09 notice just says, "a new line" and doesn't mention 'first' or 'only' or anything which appears to be restrictive in that manner.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. I'm assuming you can't have the broadband package with that. Just calls.
Thinking of getting a calls/net package but they're so expensive. BT quoted me £56 a month for unlimited calls and net :eek:0
